Ipod skips/freezes

Lately, I've been having some problems with my ipod. I use my first gen. 10gb ipod with a pc and ephpod. I haven't taken the best care of it so these problems could be just from general use, but lately a lot of the new tracks that i put on the ipod come out skipping. They could ALL just be poor mp3's but I don't think so. It's become more and more frequent so I was wondering if anyone has any advice for damaged tracks. Also, when the track skips the ipod almost freezes and majorly slows down the display doesn't interact with the buttons.

yup, i had the same problem. i checked them over with ashampoo's mp3 checker and saw that 5 or so of my mp3s were "corrupt", so i delted them off the ipod, but still had the problem. i had it exchanged at an apple store and i've yet to have one skip at all.

basically, you have a defective ipod.

Well, that sucks ###. I'm out of warranty right now so I can't get it replaced anyways. Hmm...are there any other ways of like "cleaning" the hdd. Are there are "cures/remedies" that i can perform in the diagnostic mode?
