Best Buys warranty
At $39.99, the 4-year extended warranty offered by Best Buy when purchasing an Ipod seems too good to be true. Can anyone give any input on any personal experiences with Best Buy and their warranty? I'm especially thinking about potential hard drive failure a few years into the life of an ipod.

GET IT!!
It's been fantastic for me, and well worth it. I have had 2 ipods malfunction since December; Best Buy replaced them with no problems at all--the last time, they exchanged my 20gigger for a brand spankin' new 30 gigger. You're guaranteed 4 years of happy podding for an extra ten bucks per year--it's well worth it, as I just don't see the majority of these portable mini HD's making it four years...

It's like the only reason to ever buy it at Best Buy! Get it.

The only negative I can see from it is that if you have a problem, you call their national 1-800 number, and they determine whether they want to service (repair) your ipod (leaving you pod-less for a week or more), or they want you to take it to a store for exchange. They are really anal about you having everything that came with the ipod also when you exchange...I think that sucks, what if in 4 years I don't have the foam earbud pads or dock cover?
With CompUSA, the replacement plan (Applecare?) costs the same, but you just walk in with your pod and they swap it out for you. That's a plus for me in my busy life. I hear they aren't anal about parts either, and will even just swap them out (like broken earbuds). But thiers is only 2 years.
I have an ipod from each, and I wouldn't dare not buy the plan, its too big of an investment to not insure.

No unix, that's not how it works at Best Buy. Best Buy does not repair ipods--it only replaces them. So, you just take it to the store you bought it from, and they exchange it on the spot. No phone calls, no hassle...
Best Buy only does that on stuff it repairs--but they don' t repair Ipods--which is one of the reasons the PSP is so attractive.

BUY THE SERVICE PLAN, it is a no brainer.
# 7 Re: Best Buys warranty
I picked up my 10Gb ipod at Best Buy two weeks ago. Got them to price match the Target 10% off offer. I figured I'd buy the protection plan with the money I saved. They had the plan all right and it was only $40, but it was only a two year plan. I asked about the 4 year plan and they said it wasn't offered on things like MP3 players.
Is it just my Best Buy (Colorado) or am I missing something?

mjd1969,
The way it was explained to me by the service tech when I bought mine was that the 10 and 15 gb models get the 2 year plan while the 30 gb models have the 4 year plan. They are however the same price which I really don't understand. I bought the 30 gb model.

Indeed, Best Buy is a horrid store-overcrowded and understaffed, rude and unknowledgable staff...the warranty is the only reason to buy at Best Buy.

I bought the 15gig at BB, and they sold me the 4 year plan for $40
I also later exchanged it for a 30gig, and she transferred the plan with no change in (plan) cost.
maybe the 10 gig is a different plan, though. Ask if you can upgrade your service plan (perhaps to a 4 year). I don't know if you can actually do this, but it won't hurt to check.
And for those of you kicking yourselves for not buying a plan at BB when you bought your ipod, you can go back and buy it separately up to 30 days after the purchase as long as nothing is missing or broken.
(same goes for any other service plan item at Best Buy)
