Hard Drive Loud Whirring Sound

So my iPod suddenly started making loud WHIRRING noises every time it has to access the hard drive - making it very annoying and unobtrusive. To my knowlege, I didn't drop it or do anything out of the ordinary. It's an old-version 10gig Mac-formatted being used on an XPlay PC. Any ideas on what I can do??

I posted in the previous forums and got only one response- someone suggested the the bearings may be going- I don't even really know what that means. It just started whirring like an external zip drive every time I made the hard drive work- and I hadn't dropped it or anything. I also have a gen. 2 10 gig iPod. I would just send it in but since then I have dropped it, and put a noticeable DENT in the metal in the back. I don't think they will honor my warranty with a huge dent in the back...

So does anyone else know what the issue might be?

I used to get that on my 1st gen iPod only when it was connected to a computer that was on sleep... as soon as i unplugged it, it was fine...

Mine has started doing this so I've decided to reluctantly send it back.

Anyone else had this problem lately? Mine's a G2 20Gb.
