yet another TAP question

Quick question.
I just bought a 10GB touchwheel iPod from Target for $200+tax. If I goto compusa and ask them to TAP it for me, will they TAP it for a $200 electronic or a mid range iPod? And if it mysteriously explodes, will they only give me $200 in store credit?
Thanks.

Technology Assurance Program. Basically an added on warranty to the Apple warranty. You don't have to worry about sending it to Apple for repairs if you get this warranty. You can just drop it off at CompUSA and they will replace it for you.

as far as the compusa salesman informed me, it?ll be tap?ped as "a $200 electronic". you?ll therfore only get $200 in store credit. this works both ways though, as i could get the new 15gig ipod, if my 10gig touchwheel breaks.

check this (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=ipodgeneral&action=display&num=1026930618&start=0) out for some more information.

i paid 400 hundred for mine, so i will get 400 store credits right? if i buy something with the store credits and not use all 400 bucks, will i get back the difference? and also, when i got my tap(about 3 months ago) the guy told me "if you drop it, you get the store credit and you can get a new one" is that still true, because i read alot of posts ont he old forum that they've "changed" the rules?? you can't just "change" the rules... is this right? i think tap is the best accessory for the ipod

Before this topic spirals into the "Whoops I broke my iPod" theme I should point out that this has been the subject of a thread on the old forum here (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=feedback&action=display&num=1052389166&start=0).

iPodlounge cannot and will not condone the dishonest or fradulent use of the Apple warranty or any third party extended coverage plan.

yes.

not in cash as far as i know. you?ll have some unused credits or something like that (for the next time... ).

and also, when i got my tap(about 3 months ago) the guy told me "if you drop it, you get the store credit and you can get a new one" is that still true, because i read alot of posts ont he old forum that they've "changed" the rules?? you can't just "change" the rules... is this right?

legally they must abide by the rules they had when you signed the contract (tap). a change of policy affects only newer contracts.

Thanks for the link to that thread. What a bunch of crazy people at CompUSA! Its ridiculous that they don't have any solid policy on TAPs and everyone makes up their own story...

Anyways, I'm going to try to TAP both my 5GB scrollwheel and my 10GB touchwheel when I get home in a week. I have my doubts about the 5GB since it was purchased almost 6 months ago but I might have to tell them that the 10GB is a midrange iPod and should be TAPed as such, hopefully they buy it.

TAPs are a good idea. I think it is very interesting how CompUSA will let you get a product from BestBuy or Targer, or Joe's House of iPODS and get a TAP on it. Well I personally got a 4-year PSP from BestBuy for my 10GB iPOD that I bought in January. They said that if it breaks, bring it back and they will replace it (since the are unable to repair iPODS) I think this is great you never know what can happen when you're out biking/walking/working out/gettin some to music from your iPOD. My $400 investment is definately secured!!

Depends on the plan you by. I know there is a 1yr and a 2yr, don't know if you can get anything longer than that.

2 years is the most - at least that's what it was in January when I got the TAP for my 20GB WiPod.

Don't know about that. All I know is that 2 years was the max they would sell me. Maybe the guy didn't know what he was doing. By the way, this is the CompUSA in Overland Park, KS that I got it at.

The firewire connection on my old 10gig iPod broke the weekend the new iPods came out - I took it back to CompUSA and while they would have given me another (old verison) 10Gig...I asked about upgrading to the new 30 gig. They only credited me for the current price of the old 10Gig Ipod ($299, not the $399 that I paid for it originally)...even though the TAP says it's for a $399 item.
This was CompUSA in Culver City, CA.

ipat,
The same thing happened to me, except that they would not let me trade up from my 10gb to a 20. So I had to buy the 20gb that I wanted and I sold the new 10gb on ebay that I traded my old one for.

# 25 Re: yet another TAP question
My 20 died (seems to have been a disc crash, gave the dead iPod icon) and CompUSA is going to upgrade me to the 30gig for no charge on my TAP. Problem is that they don't have a single 30 in stock. No clue when they'll hit the shelf :( Life sucks without my iPod.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and the iPod. I just finally bought an iPod after waiting 2 years and I'm ecstatic about it. I got the 30GB and filling it up quickly.

Anyways, my question is this, I bought this iPod at the Apple Store, can I still buy the TAP for it? Seems to me from reading this thread that most people here just bought the TAP, but I am not sure. If so, how much would it be? I really want a piece of mind with this $500 toy. I hated the hell I went through with my Toshiba e310 when the screen broke mysteriously and had to pay $150 to get it fixed when I paid only $200 for it a month before.

So, yeah. Thanks for any help.

# 29 Re: yet another TAP question
you can get a tap for your ipod from compusa. just go with your receipt (may or may not be needed). they?ll check to see if your ipod is working (if the sealed box is open). then you?ll get the insurance you want. i can?t tell you what the price is going to be, since it waries from store to store (or state to state). just go to your nearest store and ask them.

there seems to be quite a divergence as to what service you?ll be getting for your tap, so try to have what the tap entails given to you on paper. this way you won?t have any unpleasant surprises.

i hope this answers your questions.

welcome to ipodlounge, atariskidd! :)

If you purchase a TAP for 2 years, does that mean you are covered for 3 with the Apple 1 year warranty on the Ipod? Or is it just an extra year of warranty.

you?re covered for a year by apple and covered for 2 by compusa. unfortunately they don?t add up, so you?re covered by both for the first year.

# 33 Re: yet another TAP question
Let me make this clear to you dead beat free loaders: CompUsa offical policy clearly states in the TAP Booklet that clearly you are unable to read: If the unit becomes inoperable from the date of purchase, your product will be replaced with one of equal features and benefits. In other words if you bought a 5 gig Ipod, it will be only replaced with another 5 gig Ipod, if that product is no longer carried, than you will recieve a store credit for the amount that the item was last sold for.

Clearly, you people that expect something for nothing, lack the basic reading skills and are only out to screw others for your own sell interest.

Shame on you!!!!

Chip,

No offense, but dude lay off the caffiene. No need to slander folks around here. Granted if they are making an immoral decision and looking for advise via the forum (they ain't gonna get it here) excuse the redneck dialect. This debate has gone on from some time and if you cannot state your opinion respectfully to others in this forum, and I think I speak for most when I say this, GO AWAY, don't come back, we do not need you here! There is no excuse for your slander. After reading previous posts, you remind me of neoAxim!!!!

# 36 Re: yet another TAP question
I bought my gen 2 iPod from Amazon.com, and when it arrived, I took the unopened box to a CompUSA store to buy a TAP. They would not sell me one since I did not buy it from there. There happens to be a second CompUSA store within 1 mile of the first, so I went there. The second store sold me a TAP. They no longer sold the gen 2 models, so the price they charged me for the TAP was based on the last clearance price ($249). I think this basically means that my iPod is covered for $249, which is what I paid on amazon.

It's a one-shot deal. The serial number of the iPod is recorded with the TAP and once you use it that's it.

On the other hand, I had Best Buy's replacement policy for a Palm unit and it keeps working for the life of the policy (3 years in this case). I have heard that BB's policy is not a replacement...it's only a repair then maybe replace.

# 38 Re: yet another TAP question
I took my 15 GB ipod that I bought from Apple over to a compusa and they sold me a TAP w/ no questions asked (59$) but they did not take down a serial #.

Based on the fact that it is a one time shot, I should deal w/ Apple for the 1st year and then w/ compusa, huh?
iRLB at 2007-11-15 15:43:20 >
# 39 Re: yet another TAP question
Are you certain that your iPod serial number is not on your TAP receipt? That was big deal and I've also heard from other sources that it's a one-time/per serial number deal. The thing that makes the TAP so appealing is that they just replace it instantly. No waiting to check it out, fix it, send it to Apple...it's just a simple replacement policy. I have heard however, that it's interpretation will vary greatly depending on the store.
iPat at 2007-11-15 15:44:20 >
# 40 Re: yet another TAP question
Yup, no serial #. Just my name and the fact that it is a 15 GB ipod.
