Best Buy with PSP

Sometimes, life is good. I bought a 20GB Gen2 iPod back in Jan 2003. I was a bit bummed that the new ones came out last month but that's how things go sometimes. I still loved my older-style iPod.

Well, this week while on a business trip, my iPod gave out on me. It gave me the exclamation point folder. It was dead. Lucky for me, I bought the $40 protection plan from Best Buy. I went there today, and after confirming that the iPod was DOA, they gave me a new 30GB Gen3 iPod! They even transferred the plan to my new iPod. Sometimes, life is good.

Moral of the story: Always, always buy that protection plan!

Thanks for posting this, your encounter has given me more faith in the somewhat questionable best buy protection plan.

# 4 Re: Best Buy with PSP
I purchased The Dude (my new 30gig gen 3 iPod) about 2 1/2 weeks ago at the Best Buy by my apartment. After using it on vacation, at the gym, and commuting to work, it crapped out while updating on my Mac. It reset itself, and got stuck on the Apple logo. The only thing that worked was Disk Mode. Regardless, I called Apple and they told me a bunch of things to try. When nothing worked, they took my address and are shipping me a box to send it in for repairs.

Now I love Apple, but they don't have great experience with getting repairs back to me in a timely manner (long, long experience with a PowerBook Pismo dvd module), so I called the Best Buy and told them my story. They said to bring it in and have a tech look at it. I brought it in, the tech guy touches the pause/play button, and it turns on fine and works without a hitch. Now i had tried every fix possible, but couldn't get it to work. Apparently I had a magical car ride to the mall that fixed it. :)

Either way, the Best Buy guy asked me if I wanted to get a new one anyway, since I was inside my 30 day warranty. I asked if he was serious, and he responded by handing me a brand new box from the display case behind him. I, of course, took it. He also told me that had this been outside of the 30 days they couldn't have given me a new one, but that I should purchase the protection plan. I definitely saw the light, as far as not having the plan, so I purchased it on the spot. He said it covers everything but scratching the screen for 4 years. Awesome.

Moral? Don't eat yellow snow, and buy the protection plan for the iPod.

Have a great day everyone.

happy poddin'

My understanding was that were peripheral such as an ipod, you would buy the replacement plan as opposed to a service plan. And when you need to get it replaced, then the plan is used up. How did you get them to transfer it to your new one or did they just do it on their own?

Nope, the $40.00 plan transferrs to your new ipod--the plan is good for 4 years no matter how many ipods you go through--that's the beauty of it (I've already exchanged one dysfunctional ipod in on the plan and it transferred to my new one--which is still a 2nd generation 20 gigger).

The CompUSA TAPs don't transfer (ie they can only be used once), but they allow you to upgrade at will--the Best Buy plan is only in case your ipod dies.

Thanks Chris. This is the reason I chose Best Buy over CompUSA.

I just bought my ipod from best buy yesterday and I paid extra $40 for the PSP. The sales guy said that I can even get my money back when I'm tired of my ipod and use the credit to buy anything in the store. Is this true or should the ipod be dead for them to honor a claim?

Please comment! THANKS!

Unless you have read it yourself in the Plan, I would not take the sales guy's word on that.

I just drove to bestbuy and asked them.

your coverage is a 4 year repair protection plan. so if your prouduct goes deffective, they will repair it, not replace it.

the 2 year ones will replace the product.

the lady told me all new plans are 2 year replacements now, no more 4 year repairs on portable audio stuff.

PSP entails having the product repaired or replaced. Some items are considered "DEVO" which means they do not get serviced whatsoever, they are automatically replaced, and this is the case with the iPod. At the local best buy here, the 2 year product replacement plan applies to mp3 players 299 and below. Anything higher can get the 4 year PSP.

well, my ipod is considered 299 and below (10 gig).

I bought my 10 GB WiPod back in March (before the new ones came out) and got the 4YR MP3 PSP as mine was $399. It has recently been buggin' out, freezing on songs at random, the screen becomes very dark and discolored, and gets hot as hell. I tried the fixes I learned here (the Menu + Play buttons, etc) but it still is kinda freaky. I want to take it back to BestBuy and see if they can fix it... How does the process work? Do they check it out, repair it, or just automatically replace it, as you have said schk? Help is greatly appreciated!

If the repair techie guy deems it "broken", then they give you the equivalent one. They don't really even attempt at repairing it. Better bring all your packaging and accessories because they will end up swapping that out with the 3G 15GB one. Or at least, let's hope they do! Good luck.

I was there this weekend, and they will swap it for EQUIVALENT technology. That means another 10 gig. I would think you could argue up though.

Just wanted to update on my previous post:

I went to BestBuy yesterday (6/17) and took my buggy iPod to the service desk. I told the guy there the problems I had and he proceeded to look at the 'pod a bit. Then he just said "OK, go ahead and get another one and bring it back here." He gave me $399 in-store credit, so I was able to get one of the 15 GB 3gen 'pods. He was really friendly and it didn't take me more than 15 minutes overall. BestBuy's PSP rocks my socks. I'm glad I invested in it.

And thanks to all you 'podloungers for your help too!

Hey, I'm new here, but I happen to work at best buy, so I figured I'd clear some things up.

First, the older model IPODs came with 4yr PSPs. However, these IPODs are no longer serviced. Therefore, if it breaks, it automatically is replaced or you're given store credit to get a superior model or what have you. They don't get sent out. The newer ones, at least the 10(though I believe all) are now PRPs, meaning that they don't get sent out either, but replaced. It's a really good deal, especially on the 30gb model. I sold one to a kid a few days ago, and told him about the service..to which he told me "No, it has a limited warranty." Being tired of arguing with people, I just said ok...and then proceeded to laugh with one of the techs as he cashed out. I laugh because, theoretically ;) , you could just fry your IPOD 3yrs from now and get a brand new equivalent to the price you paid in store. A tech doens't really care, he's going to look at it and say "Go get a new one." Not getting service is really dumb, especially on something that starts at 300 dollars. Especially when you take into account the hard drive inside, and battery..service.

Myself, I almost bought a refurbished 20gb IPOD a month or so before the new ones were annoucned, but another employee did. It broke on him, and then he got another model, and that one "broke" and he updgraded to the newer 10gb model. Well, the Ipod went on clearance, and I thought I could finally get one for a good price. Alas, all the older models were gone...so I thought. Until a few weeks back when a man came in with a broken older model, and had to have it replaced. I went to go see if we had any, and there were 4 older models, brand new in-box. I told my supervisor I wanted one, and he told me to name my price. I told him 200, he said deal. A week later I walked out with a 20gb Ipod for 200 dollars...an amazing deal that I still can't get over. And the service? Employees get it for a mere 6 dollars. I went home that night to see what used ones were selling on ebay for...350 bucks, and mine was brand new, I felt like a thief, a very happy, musically indulgent thief.

Anyway, as I said, I'm new here, and that's my anecdote on how I acquired my Ipod. I'm sitting here listening to Giant Steps and loving everything about this "toy".

Dude,

That is awesome, my local best buy has a couple of modesl I thought about going in and buying and throwing them up on ebay. Not sure if I'm going to do it though. I got the 4-year PSP with my 10GB that I got back in January. If it craps out in the next 4 years then I get a brand new one. Now, that is one heck of a deal!

That is exactly opposite what I was told last week when I brought my gen 2 10 gig in. They said I had to get a new 10 gig ($100 less than what I paid), or I could pay the $100 difference and get the 15 gig. They said equivalent technology (10 gig for 10 gig), but could I ask for the price of a case and remote, since those are not included with the new 10 gig, but were with my old one? They also won't do anything if you have the headphone jack crack because it is cosmetic.

# 25 Re: Best Buy with PSP
boba_rick, i'd politely ask to talk to a manager, anytime something is covered under Best Buy's PSP, you either get equivalent or newer model, if for some reason you want to get something completely different, they just have to give you store credit for the original purchase. You should be getting the new 10 gig if your 2G 10 gig iPod has problems. Also the headphone jack cracking should be covered under normal wear and tear. If that still doesn't work try to see if there's another Best Buy close by. Otherwise, you are still entitled for a full refund of the original price.
schk at 2007-11-15 15:30:09 >
# 26 Re: Best Buy with PSP
Well, if they still have 10gb Ipods then that's what you'll exchange it for, provided it's the same model. The guy I previously mentioned, his screen was cracked, literally cracked as if he dropped it, and that's not supposed to be covered. However, he walked out with a new model 10gb anyway.

Chances are if you argue about it enough, you'll get your way. Keep in mind though, you're dealing with people, so if you come in with an attitude and malicious intent they likely won't do anything for you, but if you have a calm demeanor and are polite, they'll help you out. Best Buy, at least my store, says they have policies, but they always bend the rules from case to case.

# 27 Re: Best Buy with PSP
I've heard this on other items as well. Most likely when the Best Buy corporate reps here how people are returning things 2 years later and getting state of the art hardware with no cost, most likely they will eventually stop this policy. Until then you are good to go. Besides $40 is nothing if this works.

My first ipod (20 gig gen 2) malfunctioned 3 months after I first got it, my second one, same specs as the first, died yesterday--after three months. All I can say is thank god for the Best Buy PSP--I have the 4 year plan--now I get a gen 3 thirty gigger Monday or Teusday (they didn't have one in stock today).

As someone else alluded to, the ipod cannot be repaired at Best Buy--they just give you another one of equal value if/when it breaks. I cannot stress how good of a deal the 4yr psp is...

When I got my last replacement a couple of weeks ago, out of curiosity I asked them--they still have the 4 yr psp at my store for $40.00 (for the gen3's). It may be dependent on your local store wether they offer the 2 or 4 year psp, or the 2 year only...

It's dependent upon the Model you order. The size of the IPOD you purchase will determine the type of service.

I tried to get the 4yr PSP plan at the BB store in nyc yesterday and the register was only able to ring up a 2yr Replacement Plan. I specifically wanted the 4yr PSP and pointed out that the bestbuy.com website sold it. The customer service manager, which it was finally escalated to, eventually told me to just buy it on the website because they can only sell me the plan that shows up on the register.

After ordering my 10gig with the 4yr PSP online, I spoke with a cust serv agent on the phone and explained my experience. Her reply was "the website and retail stores are separate entities, which is why the warranties offered are different."

Judging from other ppl's experiences, BB's warranty offerings are very inconsistent. I'm surprised considering the legal troubles they went through not too long ago.

I work there, and it's been confusing as hell on telling people what service comes with it. I've told some people it's 4yrs only to have it ring up 2yrs, and I've told others it's 2(After being told by my supervisor that they are all 2 now) only to have it ring up as 4. The sales people and the store have no control over what the PSP is, because when you ring the item in, it comes up with the service that you can offer on it. From my experience it looks like the lower models are only two yrs, and the 30gb model is 4. The previous generation had 4yr plans on all of them. Also, the 2yr plans aren't service plans, they are replacement plans, where as the 30 I rang up recently was a 4yr service plan...weird.

I would ask to talk to someone else there. Unless Best Buy's policy has changed, they don't repair them, and if they don't repair them, they're supposed to replace them. Either the person you spoke to is misinformed, or Best Buy has gotten into the ipod repair business (highly doubtful), or Best Buy sent it back to Apple to repair it. I'd check into it further, see what they're up to with your ipod...
