I'm only going to list the achingly good ("How did I live without this music?") CDs, though in most cases the bands concerned have done other great stuff.
Top of the list is The Stone Roses: "Second Coming" quite possibly the best CD ever recorded...
The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: "Take Them On, On Your Own"
Johnny Marr and the Healers: "Boomslang"
Ash: "Free All Angels"
Bluetones: "Expecting to Fly"
The Charlatans: "Tellin Stories" and "Us and Us Only"
Doves: "Lost Souls"
Embrace: "The Good Will Out"
Gomez: "Bring It On" and "Liquid Skin"
The Hives: "Your New Favourite Band"
The Las: "The Las"
Kula Shaker: "K"
Primal Scream: "Screamadelica" and "Give out but don?t give in!"
You might also try "A Nod's as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse" by the Faces. The grandfathers of Indie?

Muse is a definite.
# 11 Re: Recoomend an Indie Band
geistwerks, spoon is on Merge, aren't they? Most definitely an Indie label. Not sure bout any others, but Merge is local to Chapel Hill, NC, so I'm familiar with the label.
# 12 Re: Recoomend an Indie Band
Yeah they are not Indie but he asked and I quote...
"Anybody recommend a band similar to these, or that is just plain good?"
My cd's fall into the "similar" or "plain good" section.
Oh yeah Muse is good check out their cd "Showbiz"

If you like Broken Social Scene/Mogwai, you'll probably dig some of the sidework from the band members of BSS:
Stars, Do Make Say Think, Godspeed Black Emperor, Exhaust...
as well as Tortoise, Phil Ranelin, David Byrne. Guitar
If you like the Postal Service, have a listen to:
The Notwist, Dntel (of course), Ms. John Soda, Manitoba, Death Cab for Cutie...
Have fun
# 16 Re: Recoomend an Indie Band
Theres always:
Coldplay
Biffy Clyro
Idlewild

Mew's album Frengers is really great!
# 19 Re: Recoomend an Indie Band
Seems like people have different perceptions of what "indie" is... Guess it depends on what "school" you represent. ;) I grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, where the indie scene was dominated by the "Madchester" school as you can see below...
Here are my indie favourites (not in any order, and only one song per artist/band):
New Order - Bizarre love triangle
Ride - Leave them all behind
Morrisey - Every day is like sunday
The Charlatans - The only one I know
Belle and Sebastian - The boy with the arab strap
Pulp - Common people
Saint Etienne - Stormtrooper in drag
Suede - Killing of a flash boy
The Smiths - This charming man
The Stone Roses - I am the resurrection
The Aislers Set - London Madrid
Baxendale - Music for girls
Blur - There's no other way (ok not really indie)
Death in Vegas - Aladdin's story
Dot Allison - Strung out
Gwenmars - Hurry up
Monaco - What do you want from me?
Slowdive - Alison
The Sounds - Fire
Spearmint - We're going out
Northside - Shall we take a trip
Stereolab - Ping pong
The Cure - Just like heaven (ok not really indie)
The Gentle Waves - Weathershow
The Inspiral Carpets - This is how it feels
The Happy Monday's - Bob's yer uncle
I have to add that these are the "indie basics", not the stuff I listen to every day... Nevertheless, it's great sh*t!!!:D
