Whats your favorite album?
I just ordered my 20 gb, and I've started ripping my all my cds. I'm very excited, and can't wait for it to come in the mail. Out of curiosity, what's your favorite album?

# 13 Re: Whats your favorite album?
hmmm - well, can i give my top 5?
here's 5 albums from past and present that i would want if stranded on an island. for me they all represent a tight album that doesn't get tired after multiple plays and represents the best of the band's (maybe even genre?) work.
in no particular order:
Kill The Moonlight - Spoon (Britt Daniel is a rock genius - stripped down and always evolving)
Change - The Dismemberment Plan (RIP - sad to see this band breakup. Beautiful songs emboldened by tight playing and unconventional time signatures)
24 Hour Revenge Therapy - Jawbreaker (haven't listened to this one in awhile, but it always stands out as one of my top 10)
Frank's Wild Years - Tom Waits (he growls and whispers his way through a tight album that reminds you of somewhere you've been - mentally or physically)
Saxophone Colossus - Sonny Rollins (maybe not a pioneer like Miles or Coltrane, but man is he tight - esp. on this album)
OK Computer - Radiohead (yeah, ok, ok. but i think this album represents the perfect balance of the bombastic rock of their first two albums and more experimental electronic orchestration of subsequent albums. plus, it's just #### beautiful to listen to)
ahh - thanks for indulging me
;)

# 48 Re: Whats your favorite album?
My favorite album is I Get Wet by Andrew W.K. It's hard not to get pumped up listening to any song on that album.
I also like AC/DC, Back in Black.
# 49 Re: Whats your favorite album?
I've seen most of mine already listed on here (some several times) but, what the hell, for what it's worth, my top 5:
5) Radiohead - The Bends
This CD is a hell of a lot different from anything they've done since. Acoustic guitars and tender lyrics are large parts of the album. And it has "Fake Plastic Trees" which many people feel is their greatest song.
4) Weezer - Blue Album
MAN this is a great one. Perhaps it's just nostalgia (I was in junior high when I got this one) but it's just SO good. It's a tough call between this or Pinkerton, but if you're relaxing on a sunny day, you're going to put on "Surf Wax America" and smile.
3) Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
This one's a lot more recent, but if you heard it you'd agree. When I hear it I wish that every CD I heard could be this good. You just have to ask yourself, how the hell can a CD be so spacey yet energetic, so aloof yet so personal, and so damn unknown.
2) Pearl Jam - TEN
When you look back at grunge, it's always Nirvana that gets mentioned. But if you're talking to anyone worth their salt, PJ will be named as well. Definitely one of my personal favorites.
1) Radiohead - OK Computer
What else can you say about this one? It's probably the greatest CD of all time. Period.
# 50 Re: Whats your favorite album?
without a doubt, "Grace", by Jeff Buckley

Neil Young - Harvest
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow
Sunnyboys - Sunnyboys
# 57 Re: Whats your favorite album?
Dream Theater - Awake
An album that contains the wicked threesome 'A mind beside itself' (Erotomania / Voices / The silent man), the amazing 'space-dyed vest', 'The mirror' and 'Lie', this is the one dream theater album that will never cease to amaze me. Then again, these fellows never do.
Spock's Beard - Snow [special edition]
a 3CD concept progrock album about an albino guy called Snow, conceptualized by a contemporary mastermind (Neal Morse), what's not to like?
Metallica & SF Symphony Orchestra
Where the original Metallica songs were already pretty damn awesome, they decided to push the envelope and they mixed in a top-of-the-bill symphony. Goosebumps guaranteed!
Tool - AEnima
Basically any song on this album is a hit. Stinkfist, Eulogy, H., Jimmy, Eier von Satan, Hooker with a penis, AEnema, Pu#### and Third Eye-- they all contain top-class lyrics and downright amazing riffs and tunes. This is what any CD should be: not two or three "ok" songs and the rest is just a mess and hardly a reflection of what the band can do, but a high-speed well-balanced mix of the one well-performed top-notch metalsong after the other. The typical 'songs' like 'Message for Harry Manback' are significant for tool and I'll definitely take them for granted even though they hardly add anything. If you like any kind of metal, get this album, it will blow you away and restore the proper definition of what you should think metal should be.
TransAtlantic - Live in Europe
Prog gods to their fullest capacity, performing live. And it's hardly a case of 'playing the CD lineup and get outta here'. None of the songs they performed on this double CD were less than 30 minutes long; they even extended (and IMO improved) my favorite song, Charlotte Pike Suite with 15 minutes by mixing the original song with bits and bobs from songs of the period of the Beatles. I can highly recommend the DVD box, its definitely worth the money. You have to see this if you enjoy good music! :)
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Another eye-raising progmetal album by the dream theater crew, and this one is even one of my overall favorites. Although the two-CD album contains only 6 'real' songs (of which the last one, '6 degrees of inner turbulence', a 42 minute song is cut up in 8 bits), the sound is extremely diverse and very tasteful nonetheless. The Glass Prison brings the record to a new level of high-speed Impressive Metal (the term 'prog metal' simply won't do anymore for this ridiculously talented music ;)) and rather sets the tone for the entirety of the album as well as the surprisingly new coat that Dream Theater chose to wear-- it is completely different from their previous album, Scenes from a memory, and above all, James LaBrie, the man with the Voice, mentioned that Dream Theater has always wanted to remain original and surprising-- "We never want to become predictable." [sic]
The last song on this record, which is by the way the most diverse epic song I've heard in my life, is a concept song about mental illnesses, so expect to get a lot of mindbogging riffs and tunes. The lyrics are well-written (Portnoy and Petrucci not only know how to play their instruments but are born lyric authors too) and the performance is undoubtedly of high quality.
Highly recommended. The only downpart is that the lack of gapless playback on the ipod prevents me from enjoying the entire 6 degrees of inner turbulence song without the cuts in between each song, but if anyone knows how to sow up 8 songs into one big one, by any means let me know.
Office of Strategic Influence - OSI
Produced by the same Portnoy that is responsible for the pots 'n pans on all the Dream Theater records, this album will blow you off your socks if you dig an extreme form of experimential metal. The concept album is about conspiracy and secret agency-- the lyrics are hardly sensical and the tunes overall mysterious and impressive nonetheless. It will require more than just a knack for metal in order to appreciate this album, but even if you don't really like it the first time you hear it, give it some time. I put myself to listen to it at least five times on the day I got it, and now I'm writing it down as one of my all-favorite albums ever. ;)
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
this mellow metal band is a lot more than just responsible for a few songs that are 'not unlike radiohead only a bit more upbeat'. Songs like Piano Lessons, Even Less, Pure Narcotic and Stupid Dream are in fact very accessible and liked among all my friends who listen to an amazingly various amount of music. In fact it's the only music that they all mutually like. It's light music and therewith always appreciated for any occasion; what's more is that for a change I really like the vocals. With some bands, the vox can really annoy me after a while, but Wilson's voice never gets tiring. Very nice album, check it out!
