Ultimate Albums
List one of your favorite albums here, and why you enjoy it. Make sure the album you're posting about hasn't had a post already, so we can have a broad spectrum of different genres, artists, etc.
I'll start things off with Animals by Pink Floyd. I prefer this album to Dark Side of the Moon and the other great Pink Floyd albums because it has such an epic feel to it. The sounds are like water and the listener is floats amongst them and the booming vocals. Although not my favorite album, I thought I would discuss this one because I feel today's young music listeners (such as myself) need exposure to the music which inspires much of the work done today.
Patrick.

I've got several of Floyd's works. I don't like Animals. It seems rather aimless to me. I prefer 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason'.

Linkin Park: Hybrid Theory ///
- Best Rock/Rap Album ever...
- Every song on there could have been a hit
- Gets better everytime you listen to it
# 3 Re: Ultimate Albums
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Couldn't Stand the Weather
This album is easily in my top 5 of all time. Stevie was a cat who could transend musical bounderies. Couldn't Stand the Weather has a killer rock/blues groove that makes it a great listen.

That's a pretty good album:)

Linkin Park? Yuck.
To me, it's cheesy, repetitive "n?-metal." I don't have much respect for them, to say the least.

TOOL - Lateralus
# 7 Re: Ultimate Albums
Yma Sumac, Mambo! - a great CD - quirkey, sarcastic with a great horn line to back it up

# 8 Re: Ultimate Albums
I could probably name 20-30 truly ultimate albums but I'll start with one that's near the top of my list.
Pixies - Doolittle
This album is dynamic, violant, detatched, melodic, influential and truly brilliant!!! Black Francis & Kim Deal eventhough they ultimately end up hating each other, made beautiful music together!
Stand out tracks (of course, since's it's an ultimate album they all really stand out): Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Mr. Grieves, Tame.
Charting Single: Here Comes Your Man
If you have any interest in bands such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, or The Breeders and have some how missed out on Pixies, please do not deprive yourself any further. Doolittle is a great album to start with.

# 9 Re: Ultimate Albums
Second Coming, by the Stone Roses.
The best album I own. Complex but accessible, tuneful but rocking, immediate yet complex. Great guitar, superb bass and drums, and Ian Brown's weedy vocals. But on some tracks, his whispered menace really works. An album which deserves and can sustain repeated listening, revealing more and more nuggets of pure gold in its many layers.
Real Roses fans hated it. The Stone Roses had produced a debut album that was pure pop - the Smiths meet the Byrds, meet the Beatles. Hugely successful over here and critically acclaimed, still regularly being voted the best album ever by music journos. Then nothing (or nothing sanctioned by the band) for five years. Until 'Second Coming'. In which they seemed to have turned into Led Zeppelin. (And Led Zeppelin at their best, not in the bloated rock dinosaur sense).
It was just as though the Beatles had quit after 'Please Please Me' and 'Love Me Do' and come back five years later transformed into a much harder, heavier band, producing (say) 'Exile on Main Street'.
There were some vague links between old and new Roses albums, and if you go back and listen to 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'She Bangs the Drums' and 'Waterfall' on the first album, there's a faint hint that John Squire might just develop into a much rockier, heavier guitarist, and into a technically adept guitar hero who can be spoken about in the same sentance as Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix. And there are tracks on 'Second Coming' which echo the sheer exhilerating and uplifting melodic groove of the first album.
# 10 Re: Ultimate Albums
Excellent choice, Jack. The album I'm about to describe owes itself to Second Coming
My pick has to go to Definitely Maybe by Oasis
What does pure rock 'n' roll really sound like? Listen to Definitely Maybe and one will soon know.
Oasis will always be famous for songs like Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova (and the rest of the hit album (What's the Story?) Morning Glory), but this is by far their greatest and most influential album
Noel Gallagher's songwriting, as inexperienced as it was, was responsible for creating some of the most memorable songs of the 1990's. "Supersonic" is arguably the epitome of Britpop. The riff to "Supersonic" alone brings shivers to any fan of rock.
The highlight of this masterpiece has to go to "Slide Away". Liam Gallagher's vocals are full of emotion in this track. Many people regard "Wonderwall" as the best Oasis love song, but any fan will tell you that "Slide Away" takes the cake.
What makes this album so great is that it sounds like a greatest-hits record. From the swirling "Rock 'n' Roll Star", to the epic "Live Forever", Definitely Maybe is definitely for sure...a classic.
# 11 Re: Ultimate Albums
Jack knows I also believe Second Coming to be The Roses' best album. With songs like "Breaking into Heaven", "Daybreak", & "Driving South", this is some rock & roll you can taste!

TSTS,
Yours too is a great choice. Oasis have done some good albums and even some great albums, but of the studio stuff only Definitely Maybe is a truly brilliant album, IMHO. But then when you climb Everest with your first release, where is there left to go but down?
And lest anyone think I'm 'down' on Oasis I do have every album and every single - bar one Japan only release.
# 13 Re: Ultimate Albums
I would have to say... drumroll please... Clumsy by Our Lady Peace!:D
# 14 Re: Ultimate Albums
I have to say "The Brown Album" by Primus. In my opinion it's one of Primus's best cd's. It has the all the best of Primus. Inventive bass playing, quirky guitar, and awesome drumming. It's one of my favorite cd's. There's no other band that sounds like them. If you're looking for something out of the norm give this one a lsten.
# 15 Re: Ultimate Albums
Although my favorite bands are more mainstream rock (U2, Doors, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc.), one of my favorite albums is The Head on the Door by The Cure. From start to finish, I get completely caught up in the music coming from Robert Smith and the band. Not saying it's my all-time favorite, but it's very enjoyable and you don't generally hear much about it.

# 16 Re: Ultimate Albums
...from all the young bucks out there. But The Beatles: Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album, Abbey Road - all groundbreaking in their day and they still stand up to the test of time.
# 17 Re: Ultimate Albums
superunknown by Soundgarden
IMO, their best album, and contains my personal favorite Soungarden song, "The Day I Tried To Live". Of course, having Black Hole Sun and Spoonman doesnt hurt either. I just friggin love this album, and consider it the soundtrack of my life. Oh, and a not-too-distant second is The White Album by the Beatles:D

# 19 Re: Ultimate Albums
Regarding Soundgarden, I'll take Badmotorfinger anyday! Although, I detract points from it's ultimate album potential due to intolerable drum tones/ production.

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins because it is the greatest mix of Rock ever produced. It outshines MCATIS by miles.
Definately the SP's greatest work.
# 21 Re: Ultimate Albums
I concur Siamese Dream the best Smashing Pumpkins album ever.
U2: Joshua Tree

# 22 Re: Ultimate Albums
I dont know, I really liked Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, it was just so epic, and as a person who is into various genres of music, it appealed to me at all times, in any mood.
By the way, I have Superunknown, MCIS, Siamese Dream, and Doolittle on my iPod (among others).
While I cant say I have listened to it recently, Weezer - "Pinkerton" is without a doubt one of my favorite albums of all time. It has such a grinding sound, with heavily distorted guitars and emotional lyrics throughout the cd (aside from the last track, which is acoustic and makes up for the lack of distortion with twice the emotion).
# 23 Re: Ultimate Albums
Don't get me wrong, Mellon Collie and the infinate sadness was amazing- it's far, FAR better than any other band, yet Siamese Dream is just a tad better- only just though.
The acoustic live version of Tonight, Tonight is literally amazing.
I need to get Vieuphoria.
# 24 Re: Ultimate Albums
I thought that Veuphoria wsa only SD stuff, or are you not trying to imply that acoustic tonight tonight is on it?
Anyway, my opinion of the two albums may be a little shifted because MCIS was the first pumpkins album I bought, and the first really good album that I bought and still listen to today (I was about 10 at the time, and I would say that some of my musical tastes have changed, but that one is still up there).
# 25 Re: Ultimate Albums
there can be only one.
my ultimate album has not changed in a decade, and it's not what most people would choose. it is, however, one of the most awe-inspiring, god fearing albums in a good sound system. it has terrified neighbors, brought those on substances to their knees, terrified the average music listener, brought nightmares to those who don't get it...
it is lustmord's "the place where the black stars hang"
this album is not for everyone. may not be for anyone. it has, however, shot a bullet in the spine of everyone i know who ever thought music was supposed to be "music." it's not something to be taken lightly. of course, i've known people who just wondered if it was a "halloween special effects album."
this sh** is deep. i don't expect most people to get it. i do, however, suggest if you think you know music, listen to it. there's a f***in' reason this guy now does sound design for major hollywood films.
peace.

The best part was when he said that music does not have to be music.
# 27 Re: Ultimate Albums
Dancepieces/In the upper room by Philip Glass - commissioned by Twila Tharp - this is minimalism at it's best
Different Trains - Steve Reich - also a classic, groundbreaking orchestration

# 28 Re: Ultimate Albums
Mellon Collie would have been ULTIMATE if it were whittled to 1 Cd with, say, 17 tracks. However it suffers a bit as a unified work due to some unquestionable filler material.

No, Vieuphoria doesn't have Tonight, Tonight on it- I was merely saying that I have to get it- it had no connection to what was previously said. Hence the new paragraph.
Anyway, my opinion of the two albums may be a little shifted because MCIS was the first pumpkins album I bought,
I got Mellon Collie first too, I heard Tonight, Tonight on Kerrang (UK music channel- you guys have it over there in US?) and thought it was amazing. Then I got SD, and then Gish. I'm going to get Machina when I've funded my iPod purchase. ;)

Pearl Jam - Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, Yield
Nightwish - Wishmaster
HIM - Razorblade Romance
Metallica - S&M
# 33 Re: Ultimate Albums
One of my very favorite albums is "Blasters" by the Blasters. It's early 80's Rockabilly and Phil Alvin's singing is just rockin' the ears. My favorite song by them is "Long white Cadillac" because it just has great guitar rifts all the way through the song.

Beck-Sea Change
Just a fantastic disc that grows and grows on you. Peaceful and thoughtful.
Beck-Odelay
Amazing blend of numerous styles (sometimes in the SAME song)-my "desert island" choice. Wild, risky and brilliant.
Grateful Dead- D-I-C-K-'S' PICKS #18
A majestic, powerful live album recorded in 1978 but not released until about 2000. This music captures all that was best about the dead. Minglewood blues and Cold Rain and Snow are magic.
# 35 Re: Ultimate Albums
Either album from Blue (All Rise or One Love), they're both great and my favorite albums... I dunno it's just tottaly my type of music, it's like it made for me..
GO BLUE!! :D

Disturbed. The Sickness
Need I say more?
Sure, this may be a little extreme for some people, but it ROX!
# 37 Re: Ultimate Albums
here's some of my favourites:
Nick Drake: Pink Moon
- superb songs, every last one. beautifully performed too
Lisa Germano : Happiness
- actually, anything by Lisa Germano is fine by me
- Tom Waits : Closing Time
his debut album - the one i prefer
- Stone Roses : Stone Roses
yep, i'm one of those people who thinks it's better than second coming :o . it's a jangly, melodic guitar-fest, instantly accessible and spawned a whole generation of copycats
- Pixies : Surfer Rosa:
doolittle may be better but it was already named. anyway they're both great: highly melodic but real noise-fests at the same time
- Leonard Cohen : New Skin for the Old Ceremony
great songwriter & because he's so funny :D "you were ky jelly and i was vaseline"
- neil young : after the goldrush
another great canadian song writer

You're in the majority, I think - and you certainly reflect what the critics say. Certainly the first album had an amazing three track intro - I've never known an album (let alone a debut) with that consistency and quality.
But it doesn't 'funk' like 'Turns Into Stone' and it doesn't rock like 'Second Coming'. For me though, it's not an either/or.....

and just for you vinyl junkies (it sounds better, lets face it) you can get the Limited Edition heavy virgin vinyl version from HMV for ?12 instead of ?22 at the moment.
So that's ?12 for a vinyl copy, ?10 or so for a CD copy, and ?12 for the Leeds T&CC bootleg CD!!! ?44 for the complete Second Coming experience, live and studio...
