Best CDs of THIS year

I don't want to step out of line and break the rules here, but I thought that it'd be nice to start a thread of recommendations of NEW music, released this year.

As most of the music getting mentioned in the other threads is older than Avril Lavigne, I thought that this might be refreshing. Ironic that so many iPods seem to be full of music from back before the CD was invented.

So, my votes go to...

American Analog Set ? Promise of love
Calexico ? Feast of wire
Clem Snide ? Soft spot
Death Cab for Cutie ? Transatlanticism
Kathleen Edwards ? Failer
Grandaddy - Sumday
The Postal Service ? Give up
Rogue Wave ? Out of the shadow
Ulrich Schnauss ? A strangely isolated place
The Sea & Cake ? One bedroom
Tahiti 80 ? Wallpaper for the soul

# 2 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
I like a lot of Jackonicko's. In addition:

White Stripes - Elephant
Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Jane's Addiction - Strays
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief

A lot of other stuff that is "new" may have come out last year, I have
to check (stuff like Interpol).

As to the "irony", that is about as ironic as "rain on your wedding day".
It only stands to reason that the best music of the last 5 decades (or more)
would far outweigh the best music of today. I mean, the shear volume of
music released is so much greater, never mind the quality of music today.
Speaking of which, the music biz today is so different than what it once was. Far too much control in too few hands (3-4 big labels, Clear Channel, MTV).
I'm amazed when a band like White Stripes can break out in this
environment.

# 3 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
Jackonicko and Wolfpacker have give a good list...

I have most of these and particularly agree with janes addiction, good to see them back again, not their best songs, but still good.

I would add Elbows new album...can't remember the name...might be strange people...and also would add the counting crows....hard candy..

Cannot wait for the new Starsailor album...out in a couple of weeks...that should be awesome.

Cheers,

Paul

According to allmusic, The Music "The Music" was released in the
States this February (earlier in the UK). I really like that album as
well.

The Music is definitely a 'last year's release', though, Wolfie. Sorry!

# 6 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
Well, I'm in the US, so it is a "this years" for me.

(I could also pull a Clinton and say it depends on what the definition
of "THIS" is. If "this year" means 365.25 days, then it would
even count over your way since it came out over there in
September. )

# 7 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
AC/DC - Back in Black... woops wrong decade :p

My favourite album would have to be:

Kos - Exit

although it was released in 2002, an american version was released in 2003 containing 2 new tracks, 1 remix. So it is infact from 2003.

Absolutely incredible artist - and he's canadian :)

Another favourite would be:

The white Stripes - Elephant

The 2 piece band has perserved the true rock and roll sound with inventive guitar riffs, and killer songs.

Warren Zevon: The Wind

This guy is dying and he puts out an album of covers as his goodbye. This sucker is going to win a grammy. The way he sings and teh songs he picks and knowing the backstory would make the toughest man cry.

well, i'd have to agree with a few already posted:

hail to the thief
how the west was won
de-loused in the comatorium

but i'd like to add a cd that i *think* just came out recently, or rather a 2-disc set.

bob marley and the wailers live at the roxy... i can't remember the date.

the first disc of this set was released as the bonus disc with the deluxe edition of rastaman vibration, which may be last year or not. the second disc has some other stuff that i haven't heard yet, but i'm sure it's excellent.

as usual, there's bound to be something i forgot that is better than everything i remembered...

edit: i type faster than my brain can spell-check...

Id say that this year, so far, id hav to go with Evanescence for not sounding like the same exact thing as every other modern rock band ever in the history of forever. However, I am waiting quite impatiently for the new Nickelback CD. I mean, come on, with "Someday" being so awesomely awesome, and Silver Side Up also being awesomely awesome, it will be very hard for this CD to NOT be awesomely awesome.

Try typing awesomely awesome 3 times in one sentence, its fun!

Zwan?

corgan needs to retire. how desperately is he trying to make a comeback. Pumpkins are dead, face the facts. He's trying to top what the pumpkins did - not possible.

I say: retire the mic, your career is done.
stasyna at 2007-11-15 17:53:37 >
# 21 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
Wow. Bold statements. Why is he done? Don't get me wrong I thought Billy's pathetic existance as the ?ber-egotistical frontman of the Pumpkins was a complete joke in their final years but he did exactly what he should have done, disband the Pumpkins and start over. He knew the Pumpkins were dead but the guy's still passionate and I respect that. He know's he's not going to top what the Pumpkins did but there's nothing wrong continuing his musical journey.

Now, I'm not going to make the arguement that the Zwan album is the best album of the year but if you listen to it, it's a solid rock driven record with some really good songs on it. The guy's just out to play some rock & roll and if he achieves success again...so be it.

At first I was disappointed with Front 242's new release, "Pulse", but it has grown on me. Thinking about it, it was over 15 years ago that I was disgusted with 242, but eventually found myself a big fan. Sometimes the best music has to win you over.

Second place hit me right off, no growing needed: The White Stripes' Elephant.

Hail to the Theif is great & all, but there's not much new there, basically just another Radiohead album.

As a fan of Dave Matthews I was awaiting the release of his solo album, "Some Devil", with some anticipation and a degree of apprehension (I heard the songs on the album were ones the rest of the band didn't like).
But having had a copy arrive today from the US (thanks Chris, xx) and having listened to it this evening, I can say that I am not disappointed.
A departure from the usual Dave Matthews Band songs, in that it is more laid back and mellow than some of his band stuff.
I think this is an album that will be getting plenty of iPod time.
Beats me why he is not bigger over here in the UK.

Zwan? Come on now, i'm a big SP fan, but that album was pretty sorely lacking. The early stuff (2001) that they played was far far superior to the album tracks. The album itself clips, and the songs just blend together with no real emotion. Jesus, I/MSOTS is good, but compared to Ruby, Soma, etc its nothing special. I dont know about the whole "reborn" corgan, but its definitely different. Hopefully his solo album works out better.

Howie Day's "Stop All the World Now"

would be at at least in the top 5 of my favorite new albums to have come out in the past few years even, not just this year.

What's crazy is that his albums are unbelieveable, but he's like 10X better live. If I could find more high quality live performance stuff of his I'd load up my ipod as fast as could be.

# 68 Re: Best CDs of THIS year
OK, now that the year is winding down and the new releases are all
out for christmas, it is time to take all these great albums we've been talking about since august or whenever and rank them. So, i give you my top 20 albums of 2003, in order:

1) White Stripes - Elephant
This is just a great, great classic album. One I'll still be playing in 5, 10, even 20 years.
2) BRMC - Take Them On, On Your Own
3) Ryan Adams - Rock N Roll
I had a hard time with it the first time I heard it, but now that I'm over the shock of Mr. alt.country making an 80s alt-rock album, I LIKE it.
4) Strokes - Room on Fire
5) Mars Volta - Deloused in Comatorium
Wow. Mellotron. Prog-rock. Loud.
6) Jet - Get Born
On an average year, this would've been a number one album for me.
7) Jane's Addiction - Strays
They're back!
8) The Music - The Music
Amazing album. Yeah, i know this was released overseas in 2002, but didn't get released in the US till this year and I spent the months listening to this before most of these other ones came out. If this had come out in the last two or three months it might likely have been in my top 5.
9) Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - Fever To Tell
10) Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
11) The Darkness - Permission To Land
12) The Thrills - So Much For the City
13) Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
14) Johnny Marr - Boomslang
15) Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
16) A Perfect Circle - 13th Step
17) The Coral - Magic and Medicine
18) Audioslave - Audioslave
19) Queens of the Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
20) tie: Zwan and The Shins

Some of the stuff in the 11-20 I would've bet good money when I first got them that they'd be in my top ten. It has been a good year for music. 9 thru 14 were REALLY hard. These are all so close, they may as well be considered a tie.

Honorable Mentions:

Live Albums/DVDs - How The West Was Won(Led Zeppelin), Rush in Rio(Rush), Coldplays new live one

EPs: Ryan Adams - Love is Hell Pt 1, Pt 2

Stuff that came out last year, but I somehow didn't get till 2003:
1) Coldplay
2) Interpol
3) Libertines

good list Wolfie

My top three:

1) Boomslang
2) Take Them On, On Your Own
3) 100th Window (Massive Attack)

And after those, the Darkness, Kings of Leon, Jet, Kosheen, The Coral...

The Music were in the top 3 of 2002, no doubt.

My top three for the year:

1. BRMC-Take Them On, On Your Own
2. Jet-Get Born
3. A Perfect Circle-13th Step

Audioslave was released last year. I would still rank it above a lot of the albums from this year though.

Great list Wolf!

Todd, WP,

One broadsheet newspaper music reviewer rated BRMC 'Take Them On, On Your Own' as the biggest disappointment of the Year. The three of us have it in our top two! (And I think, on reflection I'd rate it a whisker ahead of Boomslang, making it No.1!)

Just goes to show that not everyone can have good taste, eh....?

Happy Christmas guys!

Yeah, I think The Onion had Boomslang listed as a disappointment!
