One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of The Moon

You can never go wrong with it. This is one of the greatest albums composed... ever. It spent 760+ weeks on the Billboard top 200 list; little over 15 years i believe. Stats dont matter really, it all depends on the listener.
If you can borrow, cheat or steal your way to this album, please do! you wont be disappointed. Thanks =)

I agree that Dark Side of The Moon is one fabulous piece of music. I am 41 and I have been listening to it since I was a teenager.
Some other candidates for the title of greatest ever:
1.The Beatles-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. Frank Zappa-You Can't Do that on Stage Anymore Volume 1
3. The Rolling Stones-Let it Bleed
4. The Who-Who's Next
5. Beck-Odelay
6. David Bowie-Scary Monsters (Fripp's guitar is just incredible on this)
# 2 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Stones - Exile on Main St. is my favourite :)
I agree with the Bowie album though. He's a legend in rock and roll. Alter-egos and awesome lyrics make him a winner in my book!
awww you're right :)
i just posted one though.
the who have the guiness record for loudest concert. they rock. baba oreily, awesome guitar on that track.
# 3 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
I agree that Exile on Main Street is awesome-I Love it-I just like Let it Bleed a bit more!
# 4 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Hmm..
i can safely say, i can pop in ANY stones album, and be entertained. They're music is easy to listen to, great beat, and very child friendly. Unlike some of the music nowadays, too much garbage being eaten up by teens.
Whatever happened to the GOOD music? guess there's none left to be made.
# 5 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
I don't know-could be a bunch of things, maybe we are getting old :) Or maybe we just have not heard the really good stuff from the current generation??
For example-have you listened to The White Stripes? Great stuff :)
# 6 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
The new Jane's Addiction is a really great straight forward rock record without a weak song in the bunch.
I also really dig The Mars Volta. Definitely worth checking out!
Neither of these are in the realm of Dark Side but what is? :D

The white stripes?
Heck yes! they rule.
Jack white is a god on his gee-tar :)
I have all 4 of their albums. My favourite has to be "White Blood Cells". Shame they have really broken into the mainstream yet, they'd be well accepted. Indy-Rock isnt everyone's favourite genre.
Nitro: The new Jane's Adiction is awesome. I picked it up 2 days ago, and just ripped it. Really good stuff. Though the lyrics could be a bit more tuned, but never the less it rules.

Hey Jackonicko:
I agree with your choices, but i'd have to pick "The Stone Roses" over "Second Coming" and "Mezzanine" over "Blue Lines". To each his own, eh? ;)
# 13 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Second Coming is widely thought of as the inferior album to The Stone Roses but I think I am on the same island as Jack in preferring Second Coming. In this case I gravitate to the more rock influenced album although they are both great.

# 14 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
I agree with many of the suggestions above. I'd like to add to the list:
Back in Black - AC/DC
Pump - Aerosmith
I Robot - The Alan Parsons Project
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton
Unplugged - Eric Clapton
Diamond Life - Sade
Achtung Baby - U2
90125 - Yes

# 15 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
OK Computer or Kid A from Radiohead
# 16 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Kirk,
All great, all classics, though I'd pick Pipedreams over I Robot, and Backless or August over Unplugged, while 90125 does include 'Lonely Heart' I thought the rest of it was a bit forgettable... in this level of company.
Reorx
The original Stone Roses album is superb - and that first three tracks represents the best and most consistently brilliant opening to an album I've ever heard, but I don't think its worn as well as Second Coming (some tracks now sounding very dated, and of their time), and I think it's weak points are weaker than the weak points on Second Coming. The kind of GREAT album (we're comparing these records with DSOM, after all) can't really afford any really weak tracks, or tracks you'd skip, and both 'Roses albums include tracks which come close to that, although the good material is absolutely top notch.
# 17 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Ah yes, the initial 1-2-3 punch of "Stone Roses" is indeed one of the best openings to an album of all time. "...I don't have to sell my soul...He's already in me..." Classic stuff. Actually, that 1-2-3 punch is pretty much why I prefer the first album to the second, whereas you view it in term of weak tracks, I see it as "Second Coming" have no tracks that match the absolute immortality of the first three of "Stone Roses" Once again, a matter of opinion really. Eitehr that or coz I've listened to "Stone Roses" waaaay more than "Second Coming" coz my cruddy friend lost it. I think I should finally buy a new copy and listen to it more closely...
Keeping with the thread, here are some more gems:
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks (IMHO, more so than Blone or Highway. Just me I guess)
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Metallica - ...and Justice For All
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Jeff Buckley - Grace
# 18 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Well, if you did have Second Coming, you'd know that 'Breaking Into Heaven' beats even 'Adored' as an all time great Album opener, and 'Driving South' is as good as 'She Bangs the Drums', and that 'Love Spreads' and 'Tears' are also stand-outs on the later album.
Even when touring to promote Second Coming, though, the set always began: Adored>Drums>Waterfall before kicking into the newer stuff.
# 19 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
How about...
Joy Division - Closer
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Strokes - Is This It?
Pixies - Doolittle

# 20 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Jacko - Eh? Pipedreams? That's not a TAPP album nor song to my knowledge nor listed on the fan club site. ( http://www.theavenueonline.info/site3/discog-1.htm)

# 21 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
radiohead crept onto the list?
my god no.
they're genre of music is not groundbreaking what so ever.
AC/DC - Back in Black was a wise choice :)
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine, pushed Industrial to the main stream.
# 22 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Rush - Moving Pictures
Side 1 is as good as it gets. Up there with Led Zeppelin 4.
Tom Sawyer
Red Barchetta
YYZ
Limelight
talk about a punch.
# 23 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
I'm 30, but I think I have a few nominees:
Thriller--Michael Jackson. One of the few albums that DEFINED the 80's.
Slippery When Wet--Bon Jovi. One of the few rock albums that appealed to everyone.
Purple Rain--Prince. Any album that gets a Senator's wife in a twist has to merit consideration. Also a rarity--soul/rock performed by a Minnesotan.
Straight Outta Compton--NWA. Any album that gets Senators in a twist also must merit consideration.
Granted, all four albums were from the 80's, but that's basically the music I enjoyed in my youth. I have no official capacity as a music critic.
# 24 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
Thriller? I agree it helped define the 80's but please, we're all trying to forget Michael Jackson. :)
If you want to talk 80's, how about...
Alphaville - Forever Young
The Replacements - Pleased To Meet Me
The Smith - The Queen Is Dead
Erasure - Wonderland
For the 70's
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
Led Zeppelin - Zepplin IV
Kiss - Destroyer
For the 60's:
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
For the 90's:
Radiohead - OK Computer
Nirvana - Nevermind
Moby - Play
Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP
Green Day - Dookie

Your albums from the 60s, 70s, and 90s (with the possible exception of
OK Computer) were certainly major albums that helped define the era.
But the 80s? Those albums, while all very good, were not at all high profile (at least not in the US).
No, the 80s were defined by stuff like:
Springsteen - Born in the USA
MJ - Thriller
Def Leppard - Pyromania
The Police - Syncronicity
GnR - Appetite for Destruction
# 26 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
wolfpacker, my selections were not about defining the eras, it was about what I liked. If you're talking about defining the 80's then I'd agree with your choices and I'd throw in Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and eek- Tiffany!

NO,NO,NO!!! Well, I'll give you Madonna (who probably defined the 90's and now as well) but the other two should NEVER be given a second thought.

:D Well, I hadn't given Debbie Gibson or Tiffany a 2nd thought until today. I am proud to say I never owned, nor considered owning anything by them. And speaking of defining the 80's, don't even get me started with Culture Club. :)
OK, now back to our regularly scheduled thread...

One CD that is permanently kept in my car and now on my iPod:
Fumbling Towards Ecstacy - Sarah McLachlan
Hard to beat for great night driving tunes...

Not from where I sit. I agree, the album was huge but great? Far from.

# 31 Re: One of the GREATEST albums... EVER
I gotta agree with NiTRO on that one. I couldn't stand this album at the
time. I actually liked Bon Jovi when they first debuted, but thought
this album was wimpy and poppy. Horribly overplayed.
I can stand it now, but that is about it.
