New Order.
Underworld.
Joy Division.
Lightning Seeds.
The Chameleons.
A Certain Ratio.

Are all I can think of at the moment that haven't been mentioned before. If there's any of you who like early house music, then 808 State are a must, although I understand that this is very much a niche taste. :D

This was done on the old fora,

http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=musicexplore&action=display&num=1038662703

but no reason not to do it again!

Do try (in no particular order of merit) 'Bring It On' by Gomez, and 'Second Coming' (Stone Roses), as well as 'Free All Angels' (Ash), 'The Good Will Out' (Embrace), and 'The Man Who' by Travis, 'Blue Lines' by Massive Attack, 'Dummy' by Portishead, 'Boomslang' by Johnny Marr, 'Expecting to Fly' by the Bluetones, 'All Change' by Cast, 'Tellin Stories' by the Charlatans, 'Elastica' by Elastica, 'Vertigo' by Groove Armada, 'K' by Kula Shaker, 'Moseley Shoals' by Ocean Colour Scene, 'Spiders' by Space, 'Lost Souls' by Doves, 'Onkas Big Moka' by Toploader and 'Parachutes' by Coldplay, as well as 'Definitely Maybe' by Oasis. They're probably the best 20 UK albums of the last decade.... "

Last time I began the thread by saying:

"I'll start the ball rolling with the Stone Roses, a Manchester band whose first album (Stone Roses) was light, poppy, and slightly trippy and upbeat, and whose second (Second Coming) was harder, heavier and bluesier, and is one of the favourite discs in my collection. Forget Oasis, the Stone Roses really launched the whole Madchester thing (Smiths and Happy Mondays fans may disagree). There's a new compilation out 'The Very Best of the Stone Roses' which includes some highlights from both LPs, but also lacks some of the real gems. On balance I'd recommend 'Second Coming' most highly - especially if great guitar blows you away. (Highlight tracks - 'Breaking Into Heaven', 'Driving South', and the impeccable 'Love Spreads'. Also check out the ultra funky 'Fool's Gold' single.

Also Gomez, from nearby Southport, who peddle a distinctive and intelligent bluesy rock. The choice album is probably 'Bring It On'."

and

"And then there are: Ash. Badly Drawn Boy. Bluetones. Blur. Ian Brown. Cast. The Charlatans. The Coral. Cornershop. The Delgados. Doves. Ms.Dynamite. Embrace. Faithless. Fat Boy Slim. Feeder. Gabrielle. Gomez. Groove Armada. The Healers. Jamiroquai. Lemon Jelly. Levellers. The Lighthouse family. Manic Street Preachers. Gary Moore. The Music, Oasis. Ocean Colour Scene. Pretenders (yeah I know Chrissie's not a Brit, but...), Primal Scream. Pulp. Tony Remy's Blue Vibe. Rolling Stones, Saw Doctors. Shed Seven. Sneaker Pimps. Joe Strummer (ex Clash - two great solo LPs), John Squire. Stereophonics. Joe Strummer and the Mescalaeros. Sugababes. Supergrass. Terrorvision. Toploader. Travis. U2. The Verve."

And finally, for this post, the Charlatans, who kind of carried on where the Roses left off. Choice albums? 'Tellin Stories' and 'Us and Us Only'."

Nice taste, Jack

You into Ride? I think Nowhere is the best shoegazing album ever (well next to Loveless by My Bloody Valentine). I've also been obsessed with the song "She's So Fine" by Ride. It's so infectous!

Nice Choices, but let us not forget

Suede
The Cooper Temple Clause (awesome little know band)
Pulp
Badly drawn boy
Bright Eyes
The Music
Primal Scream
Sneaker Pimps (Bloodsport Album only, did not like the previous)
Starsailor
Supergrass!!!!!!
And also for awesome DJ mixes, look into "2 many DJ's" As heard on radio soulwax in London.

TSTS,
I know of Ride, I must say, but don't own any of their stuff. Think I'd like 'em?

Podi,
I only have the track 'Amber' by Cooper TC, but the others are all familiar. Personally speaking, I'm not a great fan of Suede, whose image consciousness and posing puts me off, and while I loved Supergrass when they were a struggling Oxford band, and then with the first LP (I should Coco) I'm less impressed by what they've done since then. Starsailor seem to be on the way up, and I like what I've heard (Fever Goodsouls and All or Nothing).

The Music are great, and a blast live, too, and I liked early/mid period Primal Scream (albums like Screamadelica and Give Out but Don't Give Up) but the later stuff is a bit lacking in melody for my tastes - old fart that I am.

I'd forgive Pulp a great deal 'cos they've worked so hard for it, and Jarvis C.ock.er is a laugh-and-a-half. Similarly the shambolic Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) is a real character, and 'Once Around the Block' was one of those perfect pop songs.

Jackonico,

If you only have Amber By Cooper TC then absolutely must get the album "See this through and leave". It is a dark yet melodic album, one of my favorite.
I am a bit shocked you did not like the newer Primal Scream stuff perhaps is it a bit too electronic. I saw them live 2 weeks ago down in San Diego at some random sports bar, tiny venue, band was no more that 3 feet away-Fantastic show!
And you must see Starsailor live. His voice is as pure and precise in concert as it is on the album. I do feel that "love is here" is a must own album.

Anyone who loves Coldplay should check out the new music video for "The Scientist". It's absolutely great. Only Coldplay could do that. It takes some overused plot and turns it into something original. The video is sung from the ending to the front (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it.)

top tracks ... nice line up ... Jack: especially like the reverence to The Stone Roses (take some beating) ...

has anyone mentioned:

The Jam (from angst ridden punk to socialism, all with a lot of energy and verve, no wonder Paul Weller [ex-lead singer] is still going fairly strong some 20+ years since they disbanded) ...

anyway better dash (big footy match on Fox Sports World to catch), try and pick this up tomorrow ...

No way, it's the exact opposite of that. Coldplay and Oasis love each other. Chris Martin (frontman for Coldplay) idolizes Liam Gallagher. Chris even covered the Oasis song, Songbird, at one of the Coldplay concerts in NY last year.

Both bands have the utmost respect for each other

On a slighlty different slant from the Brit-Rock/Pop (don't like the terms but for a lazy summary) there's some pretty good English hip-hop evolving. I know that sounds like an oxymoron ('good English hip-hop') but, for instance, Rae & Christian out of Manchester have been producing an ever expanding stable of young rappers/mixers/producers (Aim's Cold Water Music is ace) and have a couple of albums highlighting their label's (Grand Central Records) output (Northern Sulphuric Soul, Blazing the Crop).
A number of rappers from across the country are also making waves and often has the appeal of a harder, grass-roots feel (particularly in these times when Amrican hip-hop has evolved to a point when it's often populated with monee-grabbing, crass, comercialised, cr*p). Try Scorsese (out of Nottingham), K-lashnikov (Sheffield?) and Task Force (London) for something different from the all-too-generic P-Diddy recycling school of hip-hop.

Slightly off thread, again, but if any of you can tear yourselves away from your iPods then i recommend trying BBC's Radio6 (nice mix of timeless rock and pop) and 1Xtra (hip-hop, rnb, reggae, dancehall) digital/internet radio stations through the BBC web-site. Entertaining and intelligent DJs who genuinely love music, not dictated by a 20-track play-list and commercial free.

# 23 Re: Great UK bands to get into
Although I've lived in the States my whole life, there is something about UK rock bands that keep me looking to the British Isles for my music hunger.

I've listened to A LOT of bands from the UK, but I've come to a conclusion that the two best bands in the last 25 years are the Smiths and Oasis.

The Smiths have to be one of the most influential bands of all-time. Just listen to their album, Queen is Dead, and you'll understand what I'm talking about. The Smiths never had one disappointing album and to this day I never get tired of them. Even their collection of b-sides is godlike. I suggest Louder Than Bombs for their collection of b-sides.

In terms of Oasis, no band revitalized the music landscape (particularly in England) than this band. You have to remember, in 1994 you either listened to Grunge or the dark, brooding sounds of British shoegazing bands. Out of nowhere, Oasis appeared with Definitely Maybe (one of the best albums of the 90s IMO) and brought back that in-your-face and unapologetic rock 'n' roll that had been missing for quite sometime. The only reason why I don't put Oasis in front of the Smiths in terms of how important they were to UK rock history is because their last two albums haven't been very good. In fact, their last album was very mediocre and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Sure, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who, etc, etc were amazing UK rock bands, but I'm refering to the best UK rock bands of the last 25 years :)

The Sun, The Sea.

If you liked 'Definitely Maybe' and 'What's The Story Morning Glory', you should definitely try the Stone Roses, 'Second Coming'. Liam himself admitted that without the Roses, there would have been no Oasis, and he stole his attitude and stage presence from Ian Brown.

If you liked tracks like 'The Queen is Dead', 'What Difference Does it Make' and 'How Soon is Now' (eg the Johnny Marr guitar tracks) then try 'Boomslang' by Johnny Marr & the Healers.

If you like the more rocky, guitar driven end of the UK indie scene, then you might also try The Charlatans ('Tellin Stories' might be a good start) and Embrace ('The Good Will Out').

If you like it more sophisticated (more Smiths than Oasis) then try Gomez and Doves.

Jacko -

Can I add that you have exceptional taste in music?? :D

I love all those bands you have mentioned. I don't believe Second Coming is as provacative or influential as Stone Roses but it's a good album nonetheless. I get into many discussions with fellow music fans about the Roses. They only released two full-feature LPs in a span of 5 years, yet they are regarded as one of the best Brit Rock bands of the last 30 years. I don't think they were that amazing, but they were great.

How do you like Johnny Marr's solowork? The album is definitely worth listening to. I bought the album last month and haven't got tired of it yet. Very different from the Smiths but I wouldn't expect Marr to churn out jangle-rock for the rest of his life.

The Doves are one of those bands that I wish all Americans could listen to. Unfortunately, our rock scene in America is very weak at the moment (and has been since the late 90s). The mainstream doesn't get access to bands like the Doves or Charlatans like you guys do in the States. The Charlatans are another band I like. The broke away from that baggy "Madchester" sound in the early 90s to become a very dynamic band. Melting Pot is an essential collection of their songs.

By the way, are you into the late 80s/early 90s British shoegazing movement? Bands like Ride, the Verve (their early stuff), and My Bloody Valentine are just a few in that category.

The Stone Roses released 3 albums (and that's the 3rd time i've written that - problems with being signed on and then telling me i'm not): The Stone Roses, Turns into Stone and Second Coming.

Anyway, irrelevant of quantity the quality will always out and they're all gems. Timeless, great music and hence considered as one of the best Englsih bands.

Yet to give Johnny Marr much of a chance (save a few listens of a free EP given out outside of a venue) but will strive for more JM based on the advice.

Turns into Stone was released by Silvertone, but not by the Roses, nor with their permission (like Complete...). It was a collection of B-sides, singles, and stuff waiting for the planned second Silvertone album.

For the first time in about 10 years, I'm excited about British music right now!! Lots of good new bands around - Mercury Prize nominations are full of great albums. If you can get hold of them, do have a listen to -

The Thrills - So Much For the City
Athlete - Vehicles and Animals
Darkness - Permission to Land

Also, from the last couple of years, The Electric Soft Parade really flicked my trigger, as have the Libertines, and Turin Brakes of course.

Seems like most have been covered, but I didn't see anyone mention Echo and The Bunnymen. Fantastic band - well worth a listen.

On the subject of The Charlatans, I've always been a big fan but their stuff seems to get better and better. Wonderland (their last album) is excellent. Melting Pot will give you a good overview of their earlier stuff up to Tellin Stories (couple of tracks from Tellin Stories are on Melting Pot).

The Dandy Warhols? I think they're from the UK (not sure though). Took me a few listens to get into their first album (Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia) but is now one of my favourites (just got their latest release).

Some others I would definitely recommend, that I don't *think* have already been mentioned:

Dodgy (Ace A's + Killer B's is a good place to start)

Longpigs (both albums are excellent)

Idlewild (The Remote Part)

Inspiral Carpets (Life) - were around at the same time as Stone Roses, tho are touring the UK again

Manic Street Preachers (not sure if they've been mentioned already)
My personal Manic's favourites are Generation Terrorists, Everything Must Go and This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours

Mansun (Attack of the Grey Lantern, and to a lesser extent - but still good - Six)

Shed Seven (churned out some dodgy stuff, but Going For Gold is their best of, and is a really good album)

The Prodigy (Music for the Jilted Generation and Fat of the Land are both fantastic)

Starsailor (worth checking out - haven't heard their latest)

Stereophonics (big fan of their early stuff, not so much their most recent offerings)

Supergrass (first album is very brit-poppy and probably their weakest. best is probably In It For The Money)

There's always U2 of course...and The White Stripes are excellent (may have been mentioned already - I've forgotten now!)

Hehe, I knew this would happen.

Point taken on The White Stripes, no idea why I thought they were from the UK. Don't like them anymore then ;-)

As for U2, I consider them a UK band, even though strictly speaking the Republic of Ireland isn't part of the UK (e.g. I wouldn't consider an Irish person a 'foreigner')

But anyway...

The Edge is a Brit, and Bono, though from Dublin, is a Protestant, so U2 are not an 'Irish' band in the green/Guinness/Celtic/Catholic sense that such a label would usually convey. Not UK, but Brit, perhaps?

I thought that the Dandy Warhols were US, I must say.

Is Elbow from the UK? I'm sure The Doves are. I love The Doves. I love UK music, because they seem to have started my favorite trends in rock. I mean, My Bloody Valentine is far better than Trail of Dead's "Source Tags and Codes," and ST&C is one stellar album. Grandaddy totally stole Radiohead's steez when much of Sophtware Slump had the same lyrical theme as "OK Computer."

Also, Blur > Oasis, but that's okay, because both are pretty cool bands. I wish the radio still played cool bands from the UK like they used to, but now I can barely stand the radio. Yes, Zep is a sweet UK band. Where's Pink Floyd from? They seem Canadian. They should be Canadian, even if they aren't.

Loveless = Numba two for the decade all together. But stellar, stellar album, I NEED IT SO BAD. OK Computer was the best of the decade, hands down. But Loveless is incredible, no doubt about it.

Yeah, I also think OK computer is better as an album, but Loveless had a major influence on guitar play for many bands. On the other hand, RH also influenced many bands that are out today, and they're still going strong, so it really doesn't matter much :)
