question for jazz lovers
Just a quick question for the jazz lovers out there. What are some of your favorite albums? I'm mostly intersted in instrumental jazz/swing from the 40's-60's but so much of the music from that era seems to be in more readily available in compilations. It makes it difficult to find a starting point. I prefer albums if possible (to keep my cds from being redundant with songs), but I'll take whatever suggestions I can get so compilations would be okay if need be. Thanks to any that can help.

If you haven't already read the Big Bad Jazz Thread ( http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=musicexplore&action=display&num=1050542576) over on the old forum then may I suggest you give it a whirl.
I think you may find some good suggestions :D

Thanks Bob :) I got a few ideas off of there. Something that should be sure to please Chris (dmt1) is I already have Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and love it. I'll be picking up Birth of the Cool and Round About Midnight in the near future. Can anyone suggest some good Thelonious Monk cds though? Or Count Basie? Thanks :)

For Monk: "Epistophry" and "Criss Cross" are good.

OK, this at dmt1 and eustacescrubb -
I managed to find "Kind of Blue" (?5.99 - all Miles Davis albums are on sale in HMV right now!) and "Panthalassa" as recomended by you guys.
Recognised "So What" straight away, and lass who served me said it was a wonderful album, one she can't get enough of.
Panthalassa sounds quite groovy from my review of it in store and I'll give it a serious listen today.
So ta very much - I'll get back to you :D

You can almost never go wrong with the classics [Davis, Coltrane, etc]. But here are some of my current favorites:
Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd- Jazz Samba : A great cd of jazz/bossa nova mix with sax and guitar on lead. This is one I find myself replaying in my head all day. Great rhythm and melody. Not nearly as "Latin" sounding as the title might imply.
Charles Mingus- Any album [Mingus Ah Um, Mingus Dynasty are two of his most popular] : The band is lead by a large man playing an even larger bass- good stuff. I find his stuff to be a refreshing change from davis and coltrane which feature the lead musician quite heavily.
