Kings of Leon - Copy protected
Hey Guys,
I just bought the awesome (IMO) new album by the Kings of Leon, Youth and Young manhood.
It sounds great but unfortunately I cannot rip it to my ipod as it is copy protected. It does not show up any of the tracks in MC9 or any other player for that matter.
It installs it's own player (not sure what it is) in order to play it on the PC.
This is crap.
I just payed 110 HKD (about 13USD) and I cannot even do what I want with it. I hope this is not the way all new CD's are going.
Any ideas how I can hack it in someway. I have tried evrything.
Cheers,
Paul

Paul, there's a thread about copy protected CDs, including examples of CDs that are and what people have done to overcome the problem, at:
http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4032
If you know anyone with one of the new iBooks (900 MHz) you might just get them to rip you a copy, since the CD rips fine on those machines. I have one, and so far I haven't found a copy protected CD that hasn't ripped just fine - including 'Youth and Young Manhood'.
If nothing works, I can burn you a copy and we can figure out some useful quid pro quo - perhaps you have a record on CD that I only have on vinyl, then you could do me a 'legal' copy. PM me if it's your only way out.

Thanks Jack.
I tried to PM you but your mailbox is full.
I am trying to find ways around it and will try the balck marker.
I will PM you later.
Cheers,
Paul
Anyome else got any ideas?

OK Good news
I have managed to do it.
I downloaded clone cd 4 at the following location http://www.elby.ch/en/products/clone_cd/index.html
and then I copied the CD to a blank cd using the audio cd option.
I then put the copy cd into the player and it showed up in MC9 with just the audio tracks
I then ripped it no problem.
Thanks for the help Jackonicko...
In the end I found a site that talked about clonecd4, it said that it would now work on some players, but it worked on mine.
Anyway just thought you would all like to know, this seems to be the way around it.
Cheers,
Paul

I'm moving this to the Music>General forum (and may even merge it with the thread jacko mentioned)

I guess you could have just tried dowloading the tracks from Kazaa if they are up there in decent quality, which I am sure they are. Raises an interesting legal question though when you are forced to download tracks using P2P because the medium that you bought does not allow you to fully make use of the product!

Logan.
I do use Kazaa, but normally only for listening to bands that I am not sure about...but nearly always like to buy the CD.
I agree, I think it is crap that you can purchase the CD and then not be abel to use as you want legally.
On another point, I have notcied that Kazaa is getting flooded with bogus tracks...just try and search for the new starsailor album which releases on Monday and you will see that loads of tracks are there but if you download one or two you will find they are a sample of there first album!!!!
Wonder what will happen on Monday when people start posting the real ones...it will be difficult to seee the wood with the trees!!
Cheers,
Paul

Bogus track posting is probably being done by the record companies - they intend to make the likes of Kazaa unreliable. A kind of audio sabotage......
