Miniature USB Cable?

The 3G iPods load as a USB mass storage device when plugged into PCs (and presumably Macs, from my forum browsing before I made this post), and can thus load without drivers on WinME on up.

Now...what other USB Mass storage devices exist on the market right now? Oh yes! USB Thumbdrives!!

My question is a simple one: Where can I buy a miniature (2" long at max) USB-only cable for the iPod? We have these wonderful portable hard drives, but we still can't use them for quickly pulling files on/off random machines? That's crazy! A 1GB USB2 enabled Thumbdrive sells for $400 at CompUSA. If the feature of highly portable USB memory is that valuable, why can't we spend $30 on a simple, highly portable (unlike the Apple-brand) USB cable for the iPod?

It's funny how after all these months, I haven't seen such a cable, even though it seemed like an obvious accessory for the iPod. Why hasn't a 3rd party advertized this yet?

Well... This is a firewire solution :-(, but it satisfies your "Short" requirement.

FWIW, I'd buy one too. Although maybe not 2". Perhaps like 3ft. For those pesky PCs with ports in the back.

Why buy a 3 foot cable when a 2 inch cable plus 3 foot extension would give you the versatility to satisfy both of us.

Besides, it's not like we need to look at the iPod while it's connected, nor are we going to leave it connected...

No, but it is like most PCs I deal with now are towers, which usually have their USB ports no less than 6-8" from the bottom of the tower. I don't want to have to hold my iPod up during a transfer, or let it dangle.

I never said I was against a 2" cable, but I am personally not one to like connecting cables to cables to devices. I'd rather have a 3' cable neatly coiled down to a 4" diameter, and leave it that way unless I need to uncoil it a bit. Call me weird, silly, or just plain dumb, but when I buy a product for myself, I don't need to satisfy you and me ;)
