navipod

I just got the naviPod by Ten Technology, a wireless remote for the iPod. Ten technology talks about using it with an iPod plugged into speakers, sort of a mini stereo system, but I want to use it to control my ipod plugged into my car. The Navipod has an infrared receiver that plugs into the earphone plug and the Firewire port. It plugs into the iPod the same way that the itrip does except that it has pass thrus for both ports on the lower-back part of the unit. Dimensions are 3.00" x 3.30" x 3.50". A chrome wire stand is also included that supports the navipod and the plugged in ipod. The remote is cookie shaped, made of white plastic with a flat face that has gray buttons with white characters and is powered by a 3volt lithium button battery. It fits nicely in my hand and all the buttons are easily in reach of my thumb. Dimensions are 2.12" x 1.75" x 0.75". Both units are nicely styled and finished in the same iPod-type white plastic.

The unit works well, allowing remote control of volume up/down, next track, previous track, and play/pause. The remote doesn't even need to be pointed directly at the receiver/ipod, in fact for awhile I was playing with pointed away from the unit! The infrared signal can reflect around quite a bit. The only downside I can find is that the manual says that the unit draws power continuously from the ipod while plugged in, which may pose a problem having it set up as a car docking unit when I'm not driving around. I'll have to see what battery impact is lke. Oh, one other thing, the remote, with its rounded bottom, is slippery and won't stay put unless you place it button side down. Maybe a bit of the gray rubber on the bottom would help.

At $49.95 it's a little pricey, but I figure this may keep my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road, avoiding accidents while adjusting the volume or moving on to the next song.

Oh yes, they make one for the new iPods as well!

I guess I forgot to mention that the remote is wireless, infrared. So you have to aim it at the receiver which is plugged into the iPod. In many cases a reflected signal can reach the eyepod. I had the iPod lying flat with the navipod receiver facing up. I could aim the remote up bounce the signal off the headliner and the receiver would get. The receiver can't be covered up though.
