Need Your help... Sony earbuds and cases

Got my 15 Gb iPod last week and i LOVE it... :D Carry it with me everywhere I go.

I read several topics about earbuds.. and everyone says that new earbuds are needed.. i had a pair of sony 829 or something that i tried, sounded OK better than the Apple one

Searched Sweden for the Shure E2.. they cost 160 Euro here =( that was a bit expensive... also read that you can order them online but with international shipping we are talking about 120 dollars.

So I went to my local dealer and got a pair of SONY Fontopia EX70LP.. the closed earbud type for 55 Euro... and i thought they sounded terrible?!!
To much bass and no clear treble.. i'm not happy with this buy.. and in my ears my old Sony sounds a lot better than the new ones. I'm taking the EX70LP back to the store tomorrow...

Anyone else tried these earbuds?

They don't have much else to choose from... they got a pair of Sony 848 or something.. should I get those or keep my old ones until I find something better?
I'm not sure I like that closed type of earbuds.

I have the EX's, and the Shure's. My Ex's sit in my desk gathering dust--they're not bad, but the Shure's are incredible in comparison. Too bad the shipping is so bad...Did you try DJmart (online)? For some areas, they don't charge more than they do to ship in the U.S.--don't know about Sweden though.

I mailed DJmart for shippingprices... but i'm not convinced that these in-earbuds is the way to go for me. ;)

Is it just the EX70 that sounds like crap.. i've seen a couple of post that recommended these buds... But i guess it up to the listener.

But the difference between the Shure & EX is BIG then??
Because as i mentioned I thought my old regular buds sounded better than the EX ones.

Yes, the difference is HUGE. The Shure's are simply fantastic--much, much more transparent, much clearer, much better in all ranges--highs, mids, lows, and even a bit better for isolation. They have a much lower impedance, so they are MUCH louder at the same volume setting as the EX's--they're perfect for the ipod. You have to get a good seal with the Shure's--they send 3 different sizes of foam earpads (which I like--they don't even feel like they're in--I've finally settled on the medium size) and three different sizes of silicone sleeves to chose from ( I prefer the foam over the silicone--much more comfortable, but the disadvantage with the foamies is you evenetually have to replace them--they're ten dollars for ten extra pairs).

There is no comparison in sound between the two--the Shure's are incredible, especially for the price. They are the Grado equivalent of in the ear phones w/r to quality and value, IMHO.

Many discerning listeners find the EX70 to be poor, complaining of just the same heavy bass and muddy mid tones which you mention. I've forced myself to listen to nothing but the EX71 (the EX70s replacement) for a fortnight, and find them better, but still with the same faults, albeit in a more moderate way.

The tiny size of all in-the-earbud earphones means that they have to use tiny drivers (usually 8 or 9-mm diameter) which are bound to sound less good than larger drivers, all other things being equal. Comparing the specs of phones like the EX71 and E888 (which have 16-mm drivers with bio-cellulose diaphragms) show some differences

Impedance: Both have an impedance of 16 ohms at 1 kHz
Sensitivity: The EX71 gives 100 dB/mW, the E888 108 dB/mW
Frequency Response: The EX71 is quoted as 6 - 23,000Hz, the E888 as 8-27,000Hz

Figures cannot show the warmth and depth and detail offered by the larger drivers, with bass notes which the EX71 would convey as a simple thump, being revealed in all their complexity and subtlety when using phones with larger drivers.

Does anyone have the same figures for the Shure ER-2 and Ety ER-4s and ER-6s?

A review on Audiocubes says of the 888:

"These are hands down the most accurate earbud headphones you can buy. The virtual soundstage is the widest I have ever had the chance to experence on a set of ear-buds, rivaled only by circumaural open-design monitors. The mid-bass frequencies are very mellow, (A refreshing alternative from the all too common "boominess" of other models.) Frequencies > 10,000hz are quite textured for a driver of this size, and sub-bass frequencies extend well down into the 20hz region, with very litttle deviation in dB.
I was pleased that these headphones were not designed to appeal to the "arcade game generation," but rather audiophiles concerned with the utmost in accuracy and attack, not just deep bass. They are great for Classical and Solo Grand Piano, two forms of music known for lots of dynamic headroom. Very few cans can pull off the depth and grunt of a Concert Grand properly, but I feel that these Sony's do a pretty convincing job.

Impedence is fairly low, allowing the use of players with very small amps. Overall, a very competent ear-bud, capible of rivaling some larger cans costing much more."

I have to say that I agree.

Pioneer's $29 SE-CL30 Encapsulated Earphones may represent a better, cheaper option than the EX51/70/71 for those who need the isolation afforded by in the ear canal earphones. They have a slightly broader frequency response 5-23,000 Hz and use 10-mm drivers rather than 8- or 9-. They also come in black or white.
