How can I get my ipod to turn off with my car

I love my ipod. The one thing that I dislike is having to turn it off everytime I exit my vehicle. Has anyone done anything to their IPOD to have it turn off automatically? The only solution I thought of is opening the IPOD disconnecting the battery and hardwiring the power to the car.

there's no way of doing it without some heavy modding. but, why is this so important? it will turn off to an extent after 2 mins of idle.

The problem is that the iPod is usually playing a playlist which might go on for hours. When you switch off the car, the iPod continues on playing. It's not on idle and so it doesn't turn off. Like cas said, it's annoying to have to remember to turn it off.

The iPod should have a car-mode or external power only mode. This would turn on the iPod when external power is available and turn off the iPod when the external power goes off.

In response to the first reply I would have to hit pause every time I exit the vehicle. I thought of an idea today. Im going to look into it. I might be able to mkt something realtively cheap to do this.

i don't have my ipod hooked up to the car yet, but if i did, i wouldn't be leaving it in the car anyway, unless I was just filling the gas tank or something. So I wouldn't have a problem turning it off since I'd be taking the whole thing out and putting it in my pocket anyway. ;)

arg. I come from the days of the empeg. all these products came about from that. anyhow I want this ipod to be a car based solution. I was going to mount it in the glove box or armrest.

Very, and it is a huge annoyance.

BTW: THIS Solution is for built in like setups only. Anything else would require a few plugs extra, which may be more of a pain the pausing!

Actually, this would be a quite easy solution, all you would need to do would be to "harvest" the use of the remote. I believe that someone has already figured out how the remote works (and if not, buy a remote online).

This is what would be required:
-1 car adapter (power) that you are willing to "trash" so to speak.
-1 remote that hooks up into the ipod that you use, also willing to be trashed.
-1 person with general knowledge of circuitry, and the ability to create circutry
-1 plastic box to make it pretty.

The idea is this: cut into the power adapter cable (assuming your car cuts power to the plug when the car is turned off), add some circuitry that, when given power, sends through the pulled apart remote, the signal to play (still through the remote, so should work correctly), and when power is cut, it would send the pause signal (ie, pausing, letting the ipod fall asleep).

Alternativly, if your car does not cut power to the plug, this solution could be insterted behind the stereo (which ive yet to find an automobile that leaves the stereo on when the car is off w/ keys out) into the stereo power. This would not involve killing your power adapter, would be more permenant, but, would be more difficult to implement.

Now, this is theory so far, but im almost positive it would work. I have not tested it, obviously, and may possibly have access to a person who can do circuitry in the fall. Perhaps ill have him look inside my remote with the broken hold switch.

Anyone else is welcome to try this out, and if so, good luck!

PS, if this isnt clear about what needs to be done, mssg me, or email me and ill see if i can get a better discription.

IM in NJ also. Tommorow were taking a DVM or oscilliscope to the remote and Ill figure this out. your on my track... SHHHHHH

BTW - My AUDI i can turn the stereo back on without the key in the ignition

Ok, so that means that power is still going to the stereo when the power is off. Youd have to find a place where power gets cut when the car turns off (perhaps the ignition?).

I looked at some stuff, the circuitry isnt too bad to do, its a few simple pieces, and doesnt even require a circuit board, just about 2 or 3 transistors, some insulator and some wire.

Good luck, and let me know how you do.

Actually, the reason for power on/off is to trigger the pause/play signal. If you still get it to work, post all the pics you can get.

Thanks, good luck

WOW, this is all you would need. Find a way to make this signaling power initiated, and you got it. This should make it so you no longer need an old remote to do this. Gotta say, if someone would create this (built into an auto power adapter maybe) and market it, it would sell like hotcakes. Good luck cas, just leave me in the readme ;)

# 19 Re: How can I get my ipod to turn off with my car
I recently just hooked my ipod up to my car stereo as well. (after many brutal days searching for solutions) and i too found the fact that the ipod stays on rather troublesom. However, i find this problem miniscule in comparison with figuring out where and how to put the ipod in a stationary position for easy car access. I guess hitting pause isn't all that bad after all...just forget sometimes.

In addition to what i was just saying...would it really matter if the battery drained a little anyways? Few people leave their car for more than 8 hours (new ipod) at a time anyways, and that's only assuming the ipod were on a constant 8 hour play list. Not only that...but when you get back it will be right to charging again!...im not worried.

# 21 Re: How can I get my ipod to turn off with my car
After much searching, I found a sub $20 product that does exactly what is wanted. There doesn't appear to be much of a distribution network in the US, but it is available on Amazon as ASIN B000OIIGP4 -- item model number BI-CAR.

It does EXACTLY what's discussed in this thread -- turns on the ipod and puts it in play mode when you turn on the ignition, and puts it in pause mode the instant you turn off the ignition [and from pause, of course, it turns off a short time later on its own]. I can't believe this product isn't being hyped big time.

Of course, you need an ignition controlled lighter outlet, and a way to feed the 1/8" plug line-out audio into your car audio, but assuming you have both, this is simply an amazing solution for the money.

[If you have the 07 Prius with the ignition controlled lighter outlet AND the aux in jack in the armrest box, this is simply the must-have product for the Prius ipod owner. I'm amazed Toyota doesn't give them away with the cars...]

I don't suppose it helps that there is virtually not a single word in english on the package. I had to cross-reference what I found on three different websites before deciding that it just might do what I wanted. I figured it would be a toss-up that it would work when I ordered it -- and was quite pleased to find that it did. YMMV.

The Belkin Auto Kit will pause your iPod, when you unplug it from your 12V plug. When the iPod is paused, it will go to sleep.

My 2006 PT Cruiser turns off power to the 12V plug when you remove the keys from the ignition and open the door. :D
