the ipod remote

They did such a good job designing the iPod but the remote is really poor.
- It's symmetrical so you can't tell which way is up in the dark
- The chrome easily gets fingerprints and scratches and it starts to develop this weird orange sheen from the oils in your fingers where you usually press stuff.
- The clip is ridiculous. It holds onto less than half a centimetre of material when clipped and it easily gets knocked loose.

Why did they make such a crap remote? They should go back to the drawing board with the remote IMHO because it is not a well thought out little device at all.

hehehe, I get the orange stains also...I thought I was the only one... also, I notice that the ipod itself is actually REALLY easy to clean but the times that you had to clean your remote to keep it pristine is RIDICULOUS!!! One good way to remeber the ipod remote layout is to think that the volume is near the headphones and from their it all just appears as a image in your mind, yes, at times using the remote seems more trial and error/fumbling about as opposed to easy access to fuctions, lol.

When I use my iPod at night, I don't use the remote, but rather the backlight... yeah... it works well in the night ;)

I hope the remotes that comes with the new pods are better. Something in style with the iRiver remotes; with a LCD display. That would be soo nice :)
A wireless remote (not IR) would also be extremly nice

destined_wind, not only is it missing a menu button, it's also missing the entire scrolling mechanism and select button! it woudl be a little hard for them to fit all of that on there.

as for using the remote, i thought it was horrible at first, but after using it for a while, i have no problems with it. I know which way the clip should face if the earphones come out of the top and i know the volume is at the top and the play button is on the bottom. just give it some time and you'll get used to it, too. I do agree that the clip is horrible.

they need to develope those Sony MD player type of remotes. With a small screen allowing you to see what song is being played, the standard buttons (play pause volume) and a little tab on the side that you can press up and down to change the tracks.

These remotes suck, quality-wise. Functionally I have no problems with them, other than their getting tarnished looking. I am about to go on my third remote, both replaced under warrenty. The jack for the earphones goes bad, where the right channel will cut out and twisting the plug from the earphones will get it back usually. I would think that my warrenty is all from the iPod itself, so eventually I will have to buy a new remote every 4 months or so. Plus, they only seem to sell the remote with new earbuds, and I don't use the Apple ones.

It's apparent to me that apple could care less about the remote. When the ipod first came out, people were crying for a remote so apple did the cheapest thing and put one out. They could have done an lcd remote, but why should they, we were buying ipods without remotes and buying them with the crappy ones that they gave us. Why would we think that apple cared about what we wanted. It's all about the benjamin's.

You use Windows, don't you? If you used a Mac, you would know that Apple does in fact care about what its customers want. A lot of stuff in Mac OS X is what customers asked for. Of course it is also about money. And I'm not saying you're wrong about the remote itself either.

If they cared, then why didn't they give real on the go playlists like people have been screaming about as well as real EQ. The OTG that they did put out was not exactly what people wanted. But apple again showed their concern by giving their customers what apple wanted them to have. I guess apple's motto should be "have it our way, because that's the only way you are going to get it". Don't get me wrong I am grateful to apple for the ipod. It's my first apple purchase and probably my last.

Please desist from this naked anti-Mac prejudice, it'll only encourage flaming.

OTG playlists were probably not included because of their likely effect on battery life, and Apple wisely thought that people would not have been happy with a one hour battery life.......

Apple probably listened to their focus groups carefully, and learned that customers weren't willing to pay for a swept-up, all-singing, all-dancing remote.

I completely agree, the remote is crap. I only use it when its connected my stereo. The clip is just plain stupid. It doesnt hold on to anything, its square and quite big. I'd rather have a tube-like shape, the way sony designs their remotes.

Oh well, good machine, but accesories suck. The case it came with sucks badly too.

I'm not anti-mac. If Windows had made the ipod with the same remote I would feel the same. I'm through.

right .. so we've established that the remote is crap. I personally quite like the remote apart from this tarnishing problem. i get brown marks around the buttons, any idea how to get rid of them?
A display would have been nice because having to get my ipod out of the case to see what song is playing is getting annoying..

Would i get a replacement remote under the warranty because of the tarnishing problem?

cheers
Jim

Actually wierdly enough i had those strange marks as well, and was pretty ####ed off cause the whole remote looked like crap due to them.

Then a few weeks ago i noticed that they started fading away again, now they are gone everywhere except on the rewind button that i never press?!

... yea I have a similar gripe with the remote ... i've only had it for 4 weeks, only use it for commuting to work, sits in my pocket so no distressing movements that maybe expected with jogging etc. and yet the cable connecting into the iPod has already started to crack through to the underlying audio cables ... the design of the male connector on the remote plugging into the female port on the iPod has minimal flexibility (unlike most head-phone connectors that routinely have a ridged array of silicone/plastic/rubber to allow flexibility) - thus even if its replaced under warranty it looks likely to be an ongoing problem ... considering the iPod's requirements for mobile use such poor design in lack of flexibility at these obvious stress points is annoying.
