Belkin Back-up battery pack for iPod makes no sense to me?
I have just been looking at the Belkin Back-up battery pack for iPod on Apple's store. It runs on four AA batteries... that's 4 x 1.5 volts which is 6 volts right?? I dont understand how this works..
the ipod itself (engraved on the back) says it's 8-30 volts.. firewire is 12 volts, the powersupply it came with says its 12 volts. So how on earth does 6volts manage to run it?
The reason I ask is because I want to make something like Belkin's battery pack myself. However I want a slightly different design.
If anyone can give me info as to how the Belkin one works I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

Read that thread to learn a little about power and how it isn't measured with just volts or mAH. and such.

It might not make sense, but it certainly works well.
Using decent batteries (Duracell, in my case), I'm getting at least 8-12 additional hours with the Belkin pack. It's hard to tell exactly because I'm using it only as backup once my main battery has drained.
But I got it over a week ago, have used it daily, and I'm still at "two bars" out of four (little LED lights on the battery pack). The instructions say that when you get down to one bar, it's time to change batteries.
It's a great little gadget, works exactly as described. It *looks* a little odd with the suction cups and stuff, but the suction cups secure it firmly.
Highly recommended.

While powering the device, does the external battery also charge it? Because there is power going to it... Or iss it just enough power to operate the device?

No charge. Just power.

If the pack is attached - does the ipod take the power from there first apposed to the actual battery?
Or will it drain the main battery then use the pack?

I beileve there's a switch that allows you to turn off the battery pack and instead let iPod's battery run.

Ya, the power pak doesn't charge the iPod it simply supplies it with power. The iPod it self has a 3.6v battery.

Is it enough to load Ni-Mh batteries instead of alkarine?
Voltage gap is about 0.3V I think.

Harrison,
Sure, you can use Ni-Mh batteries, the only difference will be a bit shorter battery life. Also, the charge indicator LEDs may be a little off because they engineered them to reflect the discharge cycle of Alkaline batteries. Good idea to use rechargeables anyways!
