My Apple store order of the USB cable and Belkin auto adapter shipped via Airborne on 6/12.
Now where is the software update?

yeah... i got my usb cable today. anybody know when the software will be released. i have both firewire and usb2.0 on my computer. i just bought the cable to be used on laptop. but i was wondering what the speed difference is between the usb2.0 and firewire.

Using Ephpod, firewire and USB2.0 were about the same speed for me.

So, you're saying that the speed is the same with the USB 2.0 as with the FireWire?
Was wondering about that, since I don't have FireWire-card (nor an iPod... Yet...)

I don't have a USB cable yet, but firewire should be allot faster than USB 2.0.
I use EhPod and cann download about 2Gb in less than 5 minutes, not sure that USB woudl be the same?
Could be wrong though.

Everyone keeps saying firewire is faster than USB2.0. This may be true in testing fast/large desktop hard drives, but when it comes to the ipod, the ipod and its hard drive are way too slow for either USB2.0 or firewire to be faster than the other.

Firewire is rated at 480 bps, USB2.0 at 400, so technically firewire is faster.
However, this is a marginal difference. Moreover, there are a few indications [from other peripherals] that the iPod may functionally be faster on USB2.0 due to the way information is streamed back and forth. This is based only on a pair of external drives (one firewire, one usb2.0) that my friend tested for me a couple days ago. Given that currently the speed of transferring to the iPod through firewire is slightly slowerer than 400 (on average, in my experience with my 30gig) I'm optimistic.

no usb2 is rated at 480 firewire400(1394a) is rated at 400... there is firewire800(1394b) though :)

Is it true that you can't recharge the battery with the USB2.0 cable?

yeah druid, you have your facts mixed up.
USB2 is rated 480mbps
Firewire is rated 400mbps
# 10 Re: USB 2.0 Cable Now Shipping
Alright, I feel stupid enough now: I indeed did get the 480/400 swapped.

I just got mine. With two cords coming from the new connector, this thing is a mess.
I'll probably use it to supply power to my dock and hide the cord as much as possible (would be nice if Apple offered a black version). The USB is just to keep the option open for the future.

i decided to use my usb cable instead of my firewire and the usb was indeed faster. with firewire, best i got was about 6.5MB/S, but with the usb cable, i got 9.0MB/S.. WOW
# 13 Re: USB 2.0 Cable Now Shipping
Perhaps it's a Windows thing? Maybe the 1394 drivers just aren't as optimized on Windows 2000/XP/ME as they are on the Mac. I mean Apple invented FireWire and they put it in Macs as far back as 1997, so it stands to reason that FireWire may be more mature on the Mac. I am curious to see the speed difference between a Mac and iPod on FW and a PC and iPod on USB 2.0.
# 14 Re: USB 2.0 Cable Now Shipping
Who cares about theoretically speed when the slowest component is the hard drive itself.
My question is does firewire or USB2 tax the CPU more?
Kinda like the difference between SCSI vs. ATAPI CD ROMS.

It also depends on the software being used to synch. I was getting between 9 and 11 Mb/s via Firewire when doing a complete upload to my iPod last night using Media Center 9.1 and their 9.0.30 iPod plugin.

Hey everyone,
How does one check to see whether or not they have USB 2.0 on thier computer. I have an Asus P4B motherboard and I am running WinXP Pro.
I wanna buy the Apple USB cable, but first I wanna make sure it will work with my system.
