iTrip DOA?

So I just got an iTrip. I ran the installer for OS X on the included CD. The first time I ran that, it hung, and I had to force-quit it. I ran it again. It created a new playlist called "iTrip Stations" in iTunes 4. Do I need to sync that playlist with the iPod? I did, but I'm not sure if I had to.

After syncing the iPod, I plug in the iTrip, and the iPod immediately shuts off. If I pull the iTrip slightly out of the headphone jack, I get a low battery indicator on the iPod (the iPod is completely charged, so this is incorrect.)

Any ideas? I never get any blue LED. Is my iTrip broken?

[Update: The collar around the headphone jack is broken. I have a bad feeling this is why the iTrip won't work. Am I SOL?]

I believe that collar is where the iTrip gets its power, which sounds like the reason it will not work. Sorry.

Yeah, seems like you're SOL. :( w/o that power collar, that's it.

on another note yes you DO need the iTrip frequencies synced to your iPod to select the frequency to use. You don't need ALL of them (you can delete the ones that are used by stations in your area)

Argh!!! That totally sucks. The worst part is this isn't even my fault; the collar broke simply from plugging and unplugging a pair of headphones. That's pretty weak. I know Apple has since reinforced it, but I can't afford to buy another iPod (and actually the iTrip doesn't even work with the new ones, does it?)

I still don't understand why it costs $250 to get an iPod repaired. Insanity.

Thanks anyway, guys.

I'd think given the nature of the part - a basic metal contact - with a little courage and some research on how to get the darn thing open this could be a end user fixable part. (aside: Whoever things the original d-word that I used in this sentence needs to be censored is officially an idiot)

I've not had any need to get in there, but if you hunt around I'm sure you can find someone who has.

Hmm. Interesting idea. Is there something similar to the iTrip that will work for me? Perhaps something that gets its power from somewhere else?
