iTrip on an extension cable
Ok, can someone tell me if the iTrip relies on the iPod's remote control interface (the exterior ring around the headphone jack) or if it simply works off the headphone jack?
If it doesn't need the extra communications or power draw from the remote interface, could it be used on the end of a headphone extension cable? This would allow the iTrip to be mounted in the car and only have to plug the cable into the iPod.
It might also enhance reception.
I am waiting on my iTrip (eBay $45) and am hoping to have good luck with it in my Civic.

I don't have iTrip yet. I don't think it will work on extension cabel. It needs the outside ring of headphone jack of iPod just like remote.
That's my guess and I am going to buy iTrip. I guess somebody that have iTrip can test it for you.

The iTrip requires the remote interface - it has the same connection as the end of the remote cable.
I'm sure with a little daring one could create an extension for this. I'm not sure how long you could make it, though, I'm sure thats a very low amperage. (Obviously you could at least make it as long as Apple has made theirs).

Well, seems to me that if your gonna mount it and add an extension cable you might as well put in an FM Modulator. Mounting and cable defeat the purpose of an adapter that is wireless. An FM Modulator in most cases will also sound better anyhow.

I don't agree. The cable is what I did in my company car and it is actually enhancing the reception. You are assuming that everyone is in a position to make modifications to their vehicles. For some of us mounting and a cable actually solve the problem of making slight modifications without major changes.

I kinda understand...but an FM modulator is not really a major change. I mean if your gonna mount the iTrip somewhere, you can mount the modulator. An FM Modulator can be added just as easily if your comparing to mounting and running an extension cable for an iTrip. The iTrip is a little cheaper though.
