If you are using protected WMA files, keep in mind that any tool used to circumvent the protection is illegal. Now, if you were to burn the tracks to a CD and then rerip them from CD, that's another story. Also keep in mind here that while this may not be illegal, you're not going to get a great rip since the files will probably be 128Kbps to start with.

About that, are you able to copy to CD (from windows media) the protected WMA files? I always get an error when I try to do it, however, it doesn't say that it's b/c of protected content. It may be just an error with the software, which wouldn't be a result of the protected nature. Anyone have any ideas?

I used Windows Media Player 9 to burn the CD. Worked fine. The license is unlimited burns and transfers to portable devices. If you can't burn it to CD due to the licensing, WMP will show an error as it attempts to convert each WMA file, before it tries to burn them.

i got a note from mmjb support (that actually was coherent) and they said that, and i paraphrase, due to pressure from bill g and company they have withdrawn support for the conversion plugin, which is still listed on the website. i use a tool called: MP3 WAV WMA OGG Converter, they say its: designed for converting batch files of MP3, WAV, WMA, OGG audio from one format to another.
and it works!
