iTunes for Windows Release Moved to Mid-October

This (http://www.msnbc.com/news/966392.asp?cp1=1) is a pretty interesting article about the RIAA's recent abuse of the court system, but that's not what I'm here to point out. About 1/4 of the way down, I found a quote that I thought you guys would be interested in seeing:
And Apple, NEWSWEEK learned, quietly informed some music insiders that it?s moved up the date for expanding its current Mac-only iTunes for the vast universe of Windows-based PCs to mid-October. Apple couldn?t be reached for comment.
Mid-October it is.

Yeah, I can't wait to get my hands on iTunes.

It's a bit sad that the RIAA have to pick on disabled people who are housebound, don't they think those people have enough issues without having the RIAA slap a huge fine on them and put them in jail?

Will iTunes for Windows be available free to download over the web site?

No one knows for sure, but the bets are yes it will be free as they want Windows users to start buying from the iTMS.

A couple of questions about iTunes for those of you with more apple-experience than I:

1. It seems weird to me that there would be only conjecture about when it MIGHT come out at this point. Is it Apple's usual modus operandi to not put out any preliminary info? If it were to come out on Oct. 15th will it just suddenly appear with no advance notice?

2. Related to the first question: Does Apple generally have public betas and if so does the lack of any suggest that it might not be out for a while?

Thanks,
Justin

Apple seems to be the king of not saying word one until the product is actually ready to ship (OS updates notwithstanding). Look at the 3G iPod 20/40GB models - they were announced like 4 days before they were available for sale.

You think they're bad try Sony, they're the worst for it. They're also bad for updates.

Apple only announces release dates for retail software, such as the new version of OS X 10.3 on October 24th ($129)

When iTunes for Windows is ready it will probably show up with a splash page at Apple.com. I'm guessing that the software will be a free download, but may require QuickTime 6.3 for Windows to be installed.

The big question is will the iTunes Music Store be ready for Windows? I would guess it will.
