ID3- TagIT

Hi,

I used to be a member here, but my username/email was deleted, so i had to create a new one. Anyways enough of the intro.

Im sure this has been covered before, but the search here sucks (can't search mp3, tag, or ID3) so i decided to start a new topic.

Anyways i know the basics of this program. But what is it really doing to help the iPod, when i convert from ID3V1 to ID3V2(.3)? What i thought it did was changed the filename to what i wanted (artist, album, title, year, etc.) and make it easier to organize. Well i just "tagged" 20 or so songs, and when it was saving an error message came up saying:

"ACCESS DENIED
Error while writing to file! Perhaps the file D:\filelocation\filename.mp3 is write protected or used."

What does this mean and what do i do to fix it? Also the button i pushed to edit it was the "edit ID3V2" is this the correct button to do the editing? And do i want all my files at V1 or V2? I heard V2 somewhere. A few more questions. Is this the program i want to tag with? Do i even need to tag? And what is it doing when i tag?

Thanks,

Wilson84

Tags are what the program you use to upload read when it writes to the iPod. Tags have nothing to do w/file names. And the iPod doesn't read file names either.

You should use V2 tags (2.3 is fine). V1 is an older standard and really is limited compared w/version 2

What program do you use to upload to the iPod? Once you change your tags you need to re-upload your tunes.

If you're using MMJB, don't worry about a tag editor. You make all your tag changes from within that program.

That error probably means the files are set to read only. Open up My computer, select all of your mp3, right click and select properties. Make sure the "Read-Only" check box isn't checked.

Oh, and the reason the search didn't work is because the search engine is set to ignore words that are only 3 characters long. Because there are so many of them. Next time, try adding wild cards (e.g. "*mp3*") w/o the quotes of course.

Tags are more important to ipod than filenames.

Sorry to bring this up, but my file names from a mp3 cd are read only. How do i change this setting?

Select the mp3s in My Computer/Explorer, right-click, select Properties and on the General tab, uncheck the "read-only" checkbox.

Unless it's a writable CD that hasn't been finalized, you can't modify the file info on the CD that contains the mp3 files. I'd suggest copying the mp3s temporarily onto your hard drive, making the ID tag changes, then uploading to your iPod from there.

Wee I just got my IPOD today. I waited so long for it, since yesterday afternoon. Anyways I also have a question on ID tag. Sometimes I have a long name for an album. So when Im looking thru my playlist its hard to tell which album is which. Is there a way to scroll to see the whole name of the album?
