MC9 wont recognize new GenIII iPod-- - >
Well...It's time again to ask for help!
I am running MC9 v 9.0.180 on a Win2kPro machine. I previously had a Gen2 iPod running on the same version of MC with no issues. I bought a Gen3 30gb iPod today, running v2.0.1 and am having dificulty getting MC to accept it...
The new iPod is recognized under Win Explorer and has been renamed IPOD in hopes MC will recognize it.
I first installed all the new software that came with the iPod (per the techie at Apple store) in order to format the iPod for Win.
I also installed the MMJB and iPod Manager. I have since uninstalled both of these components, and rebooted a number of times.
The iPod is displayed in Windows Explorer as G:/iPod and shows in MC under My Computer as G:/iPod. It does not show up under CD/DVD & Handhelds. When I try to access the iPod Win requests that I "insert a disk".
I have tried to Restore the iPod per Adam's explicit instructions, but the Updater (v2.o.1) says "Can not lock iPod. see if any other applications are using the iPod and try again". With MMJB & the iPod manager removed and MC9 closed, what else can I look for?
If there is a tutorial for Gen3 iPod to make them play happy with MC9 please advise!
Thanks in advance!

Arg, this is one of the pains of Win2k.
First off, look on the iPod itself. Under Settings>About at the very bottom (under the Model#) does it say "Format:Windows". If it doesn't you still haven't formatted it correctly. If it does, something is weird.
If it does not though, then you just need to format it. Try doing a windows format first. Right-click the iPod in My Computer and select Format. You want to use the option for a "Quick Format". Once that's done, then try the Updater. It should work.
Then MC9 should be able to recognize it.
Oh, I'd also recommend that you upgrade to the beta 9.1.255. There have been a ton of changes and new features that will let you use the iPod's Ratings, Playcounts and Last Played dates in your smartlists. Essentially you can now sync the iPod played info w/MC9. You can read more about it in the sticky at the top of this board.

AAhhh--Adam...I have always been able to count on you...
Ok..the iPod isn't formatted yet...per the About screen.
I tried the quick format but I get the following error "Windows can not format this drive. Quit any utilities or programs using this drive and make sure no programis displaying the contents of this drive. Then try to format again."
MC is closed. iPod Manager and MMJB are uninstalled...
I'll update to the newer version as soon as I get the new iPod sorted out...I don't want too many variables...
BTW, can you post the link to your fabulous Smarlist FAQ you had done last year? I lost the link. Thanks in advance!
Update: That sucked...I still can't get the iPod formatted in WinExp. Same error as above. I rebooted in Safe Mode in hopes I could eliminate the application that was capturing hthe iPod but without a full boot the iPod isnt detected in WinExp.

Here's (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01/data/smartlist_example.htm) the Smartlist example.
Now, regarding your problem...this is a strange one. The only thing I can think of that would be preventing the drive from being formatted would be some program accessing the drive which your tried. Does you Anti-virus software run in Safe Mode? Not sure. But that could be it. Try turning that off if you haven't already.
Darn, this is frustrating. Try right-clicking the iPod and selecting Properties, see if there's anything in there that you can change on the Hardware tab. There should be a "Policies" tab somewhere that you can change a setting on, see if that does anything...
Post back...

I posted over on the MC forum as well...This is day three of trying to get my new 3G 30gb iPod to be recognized...
My 2G worked fine with MC and I have every confidence in all of you that we can get this one to work.
I've tried to name the iPod by right clicking the drive letter selecting Properties and naming it iPod in the Label field and then clicking Apply. I get an error message that it is an Improper Name.
I booted in Safe Mode in hopes I could format the iPod but I get an error "Windows can not format this drive. Quit any utilities or programs using this drive and make sure no programis displaying the contents of this drive. Then try to format again."
Adam, my virus software doesn't load in Safe Mode, so that's not the issue.
The iPod is working properly according to the Hardware tab in the iPod Properties. There is no Policies tab to be found.
Is it possible to have the Apple store format it on a Win machine? Or am I returning this?

Well, what about reinstalling the Apple Software and going through the setup process again. That might be able to reformat it. I sort of doubt it though.
Do you have any disk management utilities running of any sort? I know there are some weird quirks with Win2K. It just does strangely and often times folks have problems....
I'm beginning to run out of ideas...

OK, I took a drastic step and went to a local Apple Authorized dealer (at the advise of Apple Tech Support) and used a Win Machine to format the iPod. No problems formatting so I'll have to dig into my PC and see what's going wrong in there.
Know I can see the iPod in Win Explorer and drag and drop files to it.
I can see the iPod in MC as well although I haven't tried to sync yet.
Here's why..When I unmount the iPod it displays the Safe to Disconnect with the Check mark...it will stay that way. If I do a reset it will display the Apple logo and then shut off, but if I press any buttons it will reset again and again...
Is there another step I need to complete? Aslo, what's the proper way to name the drive for the iPod?

You really shouldn't have to name the iPod. But if you want to, just right-click the iPod in Windows Explorer/My Computer and select Properties. The first field on the "general" tab is where you can change it to "IPOD"
But I have a different question. The "OK to Disconnect" usually only appeared on the old version of the firmware (1.3) which was for 1st and 2nd gen iPods. It will still appear on 3rd gen iPods if you have a non-powered firewire card.
So, I have two questions for you MMarz:
1. On the iPod under Settings>About, for the Version does it say 2.0.1? Or at least 2.0?
2. Do you have a firewire card that doesn't provide power to the iPod? If you're on a laptop, you probably have a card that doesn't provide power.
Something is screwy big time here...

So I won't tempt fate...I'll live with G:/
I wish I could tell you the version...I can't unmount the iPod properly (never have been able to)..I have to unplug it, and live with the Unsafe Removal Dialog.
But, I seem to recal it being 2.0.
Any suggestions? on what's next?
My Firewire is powered. It charges the iPod. And it's a desktop..

Hm, you can't unmount it? What happens when you click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon in your systray? It looks like this: .
Oh, and make sure MC9 is closed when you click on this...

Opens a list of available items...
I have the iPod and a Compact Flash/Smart Media Reader.
Select the iPod I get "The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later."
No choice left but to unplug...and then I get the Unsafe Removal of Device dialog.
iPod shows a check mark like on my 2gen iPod with OK to Disconnect, but never leaves that screen. I have to reset and then touching any key makes reset again.

There is something on your machine that is accessing the iPod hard drive. I don't know what in the heck it is, but there is something.
Try searching the Microsoft Knowledge base. Select Windows 2000 as the product. Something is going on weird here...

OK, I did some searching, check this out...I'll look for more...

This sounds even more like your problem...

OK...these both sound like they could help and I'll check the user rights etc. However, I never login as anything other then Administrator.
So be this as it may, what is the next step to getting the iPod ready?
Do I do a Restore or just sync the way it is..? I am more concerned with the performance of the iPod right now...how do I get it ready to sync and what do I do about this Resetting issue?
Now when I try to do the Restore I get the error "Can't lock iPod. Check that any other application is using the iPod and try again.
I tried to skip the Restore since I haven't been able to attach to anything so far but after renaming the drive to iPod MC still only sees it as G:/...
and I get this menu...

Too bad I sold my G2 iPod...I'll be returning this if I can't resolve this and will have to live iPodless...:(

Yeah, I don't think MC9 is seeing it as an iPod. And I don't think it's formatted correctly as a windows iPod or it would see it correctly.
Does it say Format>Windows under Settings>About now?
I do think we need to get another restore done.
Hey, have you ever tried assigning it another drive letter in Disk Manager. I think that's under Administrative Tools in Win2K. You might need to go into Help and search for "Assign Drive Letter".
Try changing that.

# 15 Re: MC9 wont recognize new GenIII iPod-- - >
Ok..That was Big!
I was able to access the iPod in the Disk Manager (actually called Computer Management) and reassigned the next available drive letter H:
From the Comp Mgmt, I was able to format the iPod. I can also now format it in Win Explorer so there must have been an issue with drive letter G:/. I may have used G:/ in the past for another drive and there must be a program somewhere that is holding onto it.
Anyway...I then did a Restore in the Updater and at the end, what looked like 90-95% through it stopped and said "Can't unmount iPod".
I had to close the Updater. Then I couldn't access the iPod in WinExplorer so I formatted it again.
I disconnected the iPod and it reset...it displayed the FireWire plug which I then reattached and a status bar popped up. Then it reset again with the Apple logo displayed for a few seconds and then the main menu displayed. After selecting English, it reset again and now under Settings/About it does display Format Windows and the Charging icon is on the display.
So the iPod is no longer locked up and it's formatted for windows, but it isn't seen in MC under CD, DVD & Handhelds at all...not even the drive letter.
It does show up in MC under My Computer.
So the last step is getting MC to see the iPod...we've come a long way, Thank you so much for your help...and I apologize for my frustrations..
What's next?
Update: Hooray!! I rebooted and MC showed the drive letter for the iPod. When I right clicked it said Your iPod is not formatted for MC (Best error message I have ever gotten!!!) We're running a sync right now...
So what did we learn... Although the PC will assign the next available drive letter, that drive letter may have some baggage. It might make sense that the first thing anyone who is have problems getting the iPod detected does is immediately change the drive letter... That was the pivital point for me.
As usual, you were a huge help..!!
Thanks!

WOOT!!!!!
Yeah, if you ever get that message "Can't Unmount iPod" during a restore again, don't worry about it. Just disconnect it and reconnect it to a powered source (i.e firewire if you're firewire supplies power or the AC adaptor). It needs power to finish the restore.
When you first click on the iPod under CDs, DVDs and Handhelds in MC9 after a restore it should give you a message to "initialize" the iPod. Right-clicking the iPod and selecting Initialize will then get things ready for it to work.
But the restart seemed to do the trick for you.
Actually it was the screenshot you sent me that led me to that solution. I saw those other drives in there and thought about problems other folks have had with multiple drive letters in 2K. This only seems to be a problem in 2K that I've seen before.
Well, happy 'podding my friend. Now, get to using those new Rating features of your 3rd gener and updating them into MC9. ;)
