Which version to download?

I have decided to try MC9.

Being a newbie, which version should I download? Should I go for the 9.0.180 or the latest stable version 9.1?

I do not want to deal with problems that may occur with a beta version but if I purchase I'd prefer not to have to load a different version.

Any advice would be very helpful.

Go w/the 9.1 version. Not sure what they are considering the stable version of 9.1. The latest features are in 9.1.250 and higher.

For the most part things are very stable now, with the exception of the syncing iPod info to PC (Ratings, Playcounts and Last Played). Steve's working on fixes to that pretty much daily.

Oh, and it's really easy to install new versions. You just install them over existing versions, so it just takes a second.

Just a typical anal retentive here that stresses way too much over too little details.

Thanks for all the help. Without this forum, I'd be a bit more lost than I am right now with the iPod. ;)

I am using MC9.1 beta and it is fantastic!
When (not if) I buy the software, will I need to continue using the version I paid for or can I still experiment with later beta updates?

Which version is for sale? Is it MC9 or 9.1?
I have been using 9.1 beta version build 251 (ish). Is it pssible to buy or continue using this or do I have to go back to MC9 after purchase?

No, if you bought any version of Media Center 9, all the version 9 upgrades are free. So you can download the latest build over the top of your 251build, no problem. When Media Center 10 comes out, THAT will be a charge, but we may not need to go to 10 depending on what they're doing with it--the 9.1 may end up being the catch all end all for the ipod. But, with those boys, you never know what they'll come up with, and Media Center 10 may be worth our while...

Boy, I'm completely fouled up now. The sticky with MC instructions seems to be completely different than what I am having to do. The Updater doesn't recognize my iPod, I right click the iPod in MC and it doesn't give me a way to initialize or format for MC.

I've uninstalled MMJB and the plug in. Can I just re-install the iPod software without MMJB and start with MC from there? Gosh, this is almost not worth it. And I won the friggin' iPod. The hours upon hours I spent trying to get this thing to work...

Sorry, but I do seriously need help.

Randy, is the iPod viewable in My Computer as a drive? If so, right-click it and select format. Then check the box for a "Quick Format".

When that's done, fire up the Updater program again and try the restore.

If you can't get the format to work, it means that your firewire card can't write to the iPod and you'll need to try a different card.

Post back how the format goes...

Thanks Adam.

The iPod does show as drive "I" in My Computer and the firewire has worked with MMJB so I would assume it will still work with MC.

I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

Thanks,

OK, I did the quick format.

When trying the Updater, I get this message while Windows configures the iPod for Windows:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resourse that is unavailable."

It gives me the option to browse for an alternate path to find the file "iPod for Windows.msi".

I've performed a search for that file on my hard drive with no luck.

UPDATE: I reinstalled all iPod software minus MMJB and now when I try Updater, I get an iPod Service Error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I uninstall everything and just start over? I have followed the instructions on your site to a "T".

The iPod was formatted and all music files were erased. When Updater is open, the options Update and Restore are grayed out.

Thanks,

Randy

Geez, what did you do? Ususally that .msi thing is a problem w/Windows installer. How'd you fix it?

You sure seem to be having more than you're fair share of problems here. While I've not been in your situation before, here's what I'd suggest:

Uninstall and remove all traces of MMJB and all the iPod software.

Download the iPod software from www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Install that software and make sure that it properly recognises your iPod and can do a restore on it. Once that is done quit out of the iPod manager/updater and make sure that it's not still running in your taskbar. You could also use your Services Admin tool in Windows to make sure that the iPod service doesn't keep getting restarted. It is best that you don't have this running as Adam seems to think that it causes a lot of connection problems.

Then get stuck into MC. Honestly this will all be worth it when you get it going - just avoid MMJB at all costs - it's not worth the electrons it's made out of.

I can't believe that you won your pod! U lucky thing :p

EDIT: Oh well, he's fixed it before I finished typing... ;)

Whew, lucky I don't get fired for taking such a long lunch.

I re-installed the software, including MMJB. Still cannot get the Updater to work but I did the quick format from My Computer.

I just said the heck with it and opened MC, initaized the iPod to work with MC and quickly dragged and dropped 3 mp3's I had on my hard drive to see if it would work. It did. Even with MMJB and the plug in still installed. How crazy is that? I'm guessing it should be removed but I'm still puzzled by the firewire thing!!??

Not sure how or why but it did work. What problems will I have if Updater will not work for me? What should I do to get it to work? I've reinstalled the software twice (during lunch, ouch) and it's still not working.

Next up, ripping and tag editing. I'll try to be more patient guys.

The updater not working is strange indeed. Often that can not work because the MMJB plugin is screwing things up. Or the iPod Manager software is. Or, it can just be your anti-virus software. It can prevent the Updater from locking the drive.

But if things are working OK, well, leave well enough alone for now.

Next, I'll uninstall the MMJB plug in and MMJB. Do I uninstall all the components that it asks me to? The first time, there were a couple of items it told me were not being used by other programs.

Yes, uninstall everything. Just make sure to uninstall the MMJB iPod plugin first, then MMJB.
