XPlay and Windows Media player

Does anyone use XPlay and Windows Media Player to sync to your iPod? I use Media Player as my mp3 player, and tried to use it with the demo for XPlay to sync, but it put all my songs in the contacts folder on the iPod. Did I miss a step somewhere? I have one of the new 30gb iPods. Does XPlay even work with these?

Well XPlay surely works with the new 3rd Gen. iPods... And I do use WMP to sync up my pod. I had no problems so far... Maybe you should try to re-install XPlay or something. And the fact that its a trial shouldn't be the reason, since im still in the trial period as well...

presumably you guys have a plug-in to have WMP rip to MP3? If so, which one do you recommend? If not, what do you do?

I'd like to use WMP to rip the CD's. Right now I'm using FreeRip or something like that, but prefer WMP (believe it or not).

I use the Intervideo MP3 ripper plug-in from time to time, but, I mostly rip my tunes using cdex (it uses LAME to encode the MP3's). cdex and LAME are free so the tunes come out perfect...and wmp adds them to my library when I start it up.

I am using the Intervideo one. It works fine but does cost $10. I was able to copy all of my cd's with no problems.

Im sorry, but this is a little off topic...

But did I read this right. It's now possible to sync/transfer music to the iPod via Windows Media Player? (with xplay as some sort of plugin?)

If this is so, the hell with ephpod, Im going Xplay!!!

Yes you are right. I have downloaded the demo of Xplay 1.1.3 pre release 2 from their website and am adding all my files to my iPod by using the copy to removable device function in Media Player. So far it seems to transfer faster than Music Match, and is not nearly as annoying. You can get the demo from their forums. X Play Forums (http://forums.mediafour.com/showthread.php?threadid=2722) Be sure you select the Xplay Music folder as the destination for Media Player to copy to. Otherwise all your songs might end up in your contacts like mine did the first time I tried it.

No Problem, but I've just realized I was wrong again. The iPod will show up twice in Media Player, once as a hard drive, and once as a portable device. You want to pick the portable device to copy to. Here's the info straight from the XPlay help file.

"The heart of the reason that it shows up twice is that Windows Media Player makes all removable media available as Portable Devices.

For this reason, your iPod shows up once, referred to by its name, followed by its drive letter (i.e. XPlay iPod (G:)) If you send your music to this particular Portable Device, it will be successfully transferred to your iPod hard drive. The problem is that it will be transferred to the hard drive as a simple file, rather than being treated like a song and placed in the XPlay music folder, as it should be. If you do this, you'll find that the songs seem to transfer well, but that they will then be inaccessible when you use your iPod as a portable music player, away from your computer.

Your iPod shows up again, this time, as a true portable music player, and referred to by its name, followed by "Apple iPod" (i.e. XPlay iPod (Apple iPod)). If you send your music to this portable device, Windows Media Player will do as you most likely intend, and transfer the music in such as way that it is accessible when you use your iPod as a portable music player, away from your computer."

Why complicate things? I have a mac iPod that I am using on a Dell laptop running the XPlay pre-release version. To keep it real simple, I create, modify, add and delete playlists via the XPlay GUI directly, and it works smoooooothly.

I tried XPlay and I certainly like the idea. I already use Windows Media Player as my Media Player of choice, so it seems like a natural.

I tried it and I like it, but I have three questions about it.

1) When I transfer an album directly from Windows Media Player to iPod, it transfers the song quickly, but then it seems to take forever to finish processing it before it starts the next song. So it takes a long time to transfer an album. (Longer than MMJB or Ephpod.) Does this sound normal?

2) Is there any way to transfer my Audible files with Xplay. Currently, I can transfer them with Ephpod or AudibleManager, but I found when I transferred songs to iPod with XPlay/WMP, the Audible files still show up on the iPod but they will not play.

Anyone have any advice or comments? Much appreciated.

As far as I know, you have only two options. I may be wrong so please research this.

In terms of Audible content, you should do one of the following:

-On a windows iPod, use AudibleManager found at www.audible.com/software

or

download your Audible content in MP3 format. Then you dont have to worry about anything.

I personally do not use media player for iPod synching. Can someone else help with this?

# 16 Re: XPlay and Windows Media player
I can definitely help with this. windows media player is a neat program but it's painfully slow when moving music to other places (like portable devices). it does a lot of checking stuff that really slows stuff down. I hope this speeds up in wmp 10! :)

the audiblemanager comment was right on. just use the latest version of xplay and it will recognize stuff you load with audiblemanager (and the stuff will play back on your ipod). cool huh?

# 17 Re: XPlay and Windows Media player
I don't believe the Xplay support Audible yet. AMG can set me straight on that one.

Do remember though that Xplay has sync feature that can be used outside of WMP. It's much faster than going through WMP, and you can select to sync w/WMP Playlists/Auto Smartlists which is very cool.

Ahhh... thanks guys. That did help. And after following up, here's some notes.

1) I updated from version 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 and this addressed the problem of "wiping out" my Audible files. This is listed in their version notes. It still is not "compatible" with Audible files in that you can't transfer Audible files with XPlay, but at least it doesn't mess up the ones you transferred by other means. Would be nice if it did handle Audible files though. I get tired of using multiple programs.

2) Yeah, the WMP9 route takes way too long. Its too bad. I use WMP to rip CD's and sometimes I just want to add that CD quickly to the iPod. As long as I have the program open, you'd think you could just quickly transfer the songs to the iPod. But the fact is, I can open another program, connect and read the iPod, and add the files quicker than WMP will transfer them.

The complete sync is nice in XPlay but often, I just want to add one folder or a handful of songs. Of course, I can open XPlay and drag and drop, but I find EphPod will do this job faster.

All in all, I really like Xplay. And what I like best about it is that it seems very professional and stable and seems to work every time and I've never had it crash. I'm sick of buggy software so I give them big points for that.

I am trying to use xplay through WMP to transfer songs, but it only recognises ipod as a regular file device, not a music device. I read the "help" part about clicking on the "Ipod apple" not just "Ipod" icon, but I don't have Ipod showing up as two devices. Only one. Someone earlier asked about this but there was never an answer. How do I get it to show up as a music device? I can't find these music files anywhere on my ipod. I looked in contacts and everything. It looks like this would work great for me if I could only get it to recognise ipod as a music device. I'm about to blow a gasket waiting for MMJB to transfer files. Takes forever. What is a "digitally enhanced temporary file" anyway, and why does MMJB have to convert my songs into this before transferring to my Ipod?

what version of wmp are you trying to use? you don't really have to do anything special. if xplay is installed and you can see your ipod as a drive letter it should also show up in copy to portable devices in wmp.

# 21 Re: XPlay and Windows Media player
I am using version 9 of wmp. My ipod does show up, just not as a device to send music to. My files transfer, just not as music files. I can't find them on my ipod anywhere. I have been talking to someone on the mediafour forum and she suggested that I uninstal the apple software, the ipod driver and some other driver. She states : "In disk drives look for any SBP2 devices and uninstall them, in "IEEE1394 Host Controllers", uninstall everything. Leave your Ipod connected and restart your computer." I did this and nothing worked right after that. I could not even get onto the internet. I attempted a system restore, but my computer just kept getting hung up. So I just had to hold down the power on button until my computer turned off. I started it again and things seem ok now. I don't know if the System Restore worked or what. I need to check and see if these drivers are back on. My MMJB does not recognise the Ipod. Xplay still only recognises Ipod as another removable disk drive, not a music player. I'm stumped. I guess I'll just have to suffer with MMJB if I can get it to recognise my Ipod. Maybe I'll reinstall the Ipod software... for the umpteenth time! I'm beginning to regret my Ipod purchase.

from what you described your computer shouldn't have hung up during a system restore...or...anything else.

sounds like you may have larger issues at hand if windows isn't working right. do other proggies like ephpod work ok? It's free and quick to download and try.

# 23 Re: XPlay and Windows Media player
OK, I just removed MMJB from my computer and went ahead and bought Xplay, loaded it on and so far things are going swimmingly. I downloaded an album to my Ipod quickly and without any problems. Well, not exactly true... now I've discovered that I already had some of the songs already on there, and at first glance I can't tell how to delete them (is this the same as "scrubbing" a song? I saw this mentioned somewhere). By the way, I am using Windows Mediaplayer and downloading through Xplay to my Ipod. Any help out there?

glad to hear things are working better now. :) :) :) :)
if you use the explore my ipod with xplay icon on your desktop you can navigate your ipod through windows and delete individual songs (from the songs directory) or entire albums or all albums by an artist (from their respective directories).
