Re-encoding Mp3s
Hi,
I just got a new 30GB ipod and i realized that most of my mp3s are encoded at 96 and 128kbps. I want to up it to 192kbps but when I did that, the sound became really choppy. Like the song would abruptly end, there would be no gradual decline of the sound and sometimes the sound would sound distorted. Is there anyway to fix this? I want re-encode my mp3s to 192kbps for it to sound better in my car. Im using MC9 with the Lame encoder plugin to re-encode it.
Any help would be appreciated.
THanks,
Christian

Your only option really is to re-rip your CD collection into the bitrate you want (in this case 192kbps).
Converting a song from a higher to a lower bit rate should be possible, but converting a lower bitrate to a higher bitrate would probably result in trash.
You could transform a brand new BMW into a beat up old garbage car, but not vice versa.

doesnt make much of a difference.
Once you encoded the file from a *.Wav -> *.MP3, you already lost some data on the file (mp3, atrac, aac, are all lossless codecs).
Making the MP3 into a Wav file wouldnt recover any of the lost data on the file, so you'd be stuck just where you were in the beginning.

In fact, every time you convert either to .wav, or try to "uncompress" by going to a higher bit rate, chances are you will lose even more file data (you certainly won't gain any, it's impossible), so unfortunately your best bet is to start over and rerip and encode. And IMHO it would be well worth the effort.

Its tough, the decision on what kinda compression rate and format to use is a long lasting one. I recently completed my major ripping project, ripping 800+ CD's using MP3 and rates averaging 160kbps that sound OK to my aging ears. Now for new CDs I'm using APE (I bought a new hard drive after ripping all those CDs).
Fortunately I don't regret either decision and MC9 database functionality is so cool at identifying CD's that do need upgrading that I'm slowly working on bringing pre-major rip CD's up to standard.

Can I turn the question round.
I have about 400 mp3 files that I want to give someone but I want to reduce the bitrate a bit so that they will fit on a CD. Is there some software that will do batch re-encoding for me? I really don't want to do them one by one!

norm! You're in the right place!
I needed to do exactly this - downgrade some 320s to 192's. I used Media Center 9 with the file directory view set to "recursive (no data files)" (assuming all the mp3's are in sub folders within one larger folder of course - may be different for you), then selected all the songs, went to "Tools > More Tools > Convert Format", selected the codec i wanted (Lame 3.90.2 all the way!), and set it loose.
Took a while as I was downgrading over 500 songs, but MC9 did it all without any errors. Tunes sound fantatsic too!
