Need an HDD scan program

can anyone find me an HDD scan program for OSX that will find a volume that won't mount.

Try Disk Utility or AppleSystem Profiler - both on your Mac already. Or, open the Terminal and use diskutil (type "diskutil info" at the prompt to see a list of diskutil's functions.)
