To switch or not to switch?

Hi guys! Just bought a 30gb iPod and its already full of music (25 gb). Ive used ephpod to transfer files. But I saw, that many of you are using mc9 instead. Dl'ed mc, but it said, Ive to reformat my iPod. I was just like NOOOOOOO, 'cos all my music on HD is in mpc, not mp3/mp4 and Ive spent 2 nights to reconvert files :-\ And of course Ive already deleted all mp3 Ive transfered. Now I don't really know, should I switch from ephpod to mc9, 'cos I always have to convert files 2 times: mpc and mp3 (only because of iPod) and then just transfer them with ephpod.

And btw can I just save files from F:\iPod_Control\Music to my HD and after formating iPod with mc9 move them back? Will it work?

First off, yes MC9 is the best. :D

There are so many advantages to it I won't go into them all here. You can check out the program for yourself.

But as to your problem. There's a real simple way to get those files off of the ipod so you can re-upload them.

This is an interesting dilemma though. MC9 supports on the fly conversion, so it will convert your songs for you at upload time. This (as you know) takes a long time. Any consecutive syncs you do, MC9 is smart enough to skip any files already converted.

Now, what my solution was going to be was to copy the MP3s off of the iPod in My Computer, then reformat the iPod, then reupload them. Then I realized you don't want to keep these MP3s on your PC. You want the MPCs on there.

So, there's really no way to get those MP3s off and to get MC9 to recognize that mp3 x came from mpc file x. That is, unless you do it through MC9 and let MC9 do the conversion.

Do you get my drift? This is kind of confusing.

I'd say the best thing to do (sadly) would be to reformat and let MC9 to the reconversion for you on sync. Then everything will be "mapped" correctly.

Sorry about that, but I highly suggest you try it out, it's well worth it.

Oh, to answer your other question, yes, that would be possible, just to copy off the Music folder, import all the tunes into MC9 and then do a sync. But one thing about MC9, it really requires that you keep the tunes on your PC, that's why I said to go the route I recommened. If you can keep the mp3s on your PC then go this route. You can use MC9's Rename Files From Properties feature to automatically organize the songs into Artist/Album subfolders and rename the files to a convention you like.

I agree with Adam 100%. I used to be an ephpod user and then I switched with all the advice and good things I heard about MC9. It is definitely worth the money. I use it every day!!! :)

This testimonial is from a real person not being paid by J River.

Firs of all, thanx for replies guys! ;)

So! Ive just formated my iPod and currently reconverting my music again to mp3 (not with mc9, but with OSMPX - its the best IMHO), because its not working the way, i want it to work :D Hope it really worth it! But it really sucks, that iPod supports only mp3 and mp4...

And btw thanx for a great hlp file! Cheers!

What is OSMPX--never heard of it. I think most people (not all, but most) would consider EAC/LAME the best overall--MC9 is a close second; it rips in digital secure, and has a LAME encoder option...

About OSMPX you can read here: http://www.orlsoft.ru/?en .

And yeah, of course if you want a real digital copy of your CD you should stop using ALL-IN-ONE programms and use special utilities (EAC/OSMPX) .

Ive transfered all my collection (finally!) to iPod with MC9. Thanx a lot guys! Now Ive to figure out, how this thing works and thats it! And it seems to me a bit better, than ephpod!

Yeah, I made the switch to MC9 this past week. I haven't paid for it quite yet though...but as soon as they get out a beta that pulls back in the iPod's playcounts, ratings, and last-played time, they'll have my $40. :) I do most of my listening on my iPod rather than at my computer, so building smartlists based on what I have/haven't listened to lately, etc. is the ideal feature.

I'm guessing they'll have to make some modifications to handle how it syncs the devices, since it's now a two-way communication. Probably something like this:

1) Plug in iPod, wait for it to show up in MC9
2) Sync the iPod
2a) MC9 pulls and parses playcount/rating/last-played from the iPod and updates its own DB and smartlists that have those parameters included
2b) Sync window pops up for playlist selection
2c) Sync away!

I've been hitting their forums every day about 3pm-ish to check the changelog for the next new version...

Ben:

I'm working w/Steve on getting that done. I sent him a playcounts file last night as a test. Apparently, the playcounts files isn't being saved on his iPod because he doesn't have a dock. I'm going to question that, it just doesn't seem to make sense.

Anyway, I know he's starting on it. He's usually pretty quick on this. Expect some bugs for the first time out. It's the way they develop, but it get the product in the hands of the users faster and get feedback directly from users during the development phase, so the end result is a product better tailored to real world users.

I don't have a dock either, and it works fine. There are the obvious sanity checks: 2.0.1 firmware, the fact that the file is erased after disconnect, etc. If he needs additional datasets to work with, I can be a guinea pig for the cause. He can just leave me a message over at the MC9 board (I'm the same username there).

Turns out Steve was a little confused by the post about 2.0.1 on the Apple Web site. It says that 2.0.1 is for iPods w/the "Dock Connector". He read that as meaning he had to have a dock. :D

So, I corrected him. He upgraded and now he's testing w/his iPod. Probably won't need files anymore.

Also I nudged him to make sure that we capture the last played date and also get that added to MC9's database on sync.

This will be so great...!

Excellent - I assume he's got the link to the full format of the Play Counts file? Wouldn't want him to go through and duplicate the effort.

I think he does, are you referring to the link "otto" posted a while ago?

Might wanna post it in the IPOD SUPPORT thread over at JRivers boards.
