Songs keep skipping when ripping/encoding

I installed MC9 on a Sony Vaio Picturebook w/ an external CD-ROM drive (no other software has yet to work on this notebook). I rip/encode songs from CDs, and when I playback the songs, I keep hearing a skipping sound in each song. Sounds like a bad LP that makes skipping noises.

I'm not the most ripping/encoding-savvy user, so can anyone help? Thanks!

It's probably coming from the ripper.

When you rip, choose "options" before ripping. In options, there will be selection for ripping mode--the default is "digital burst" or something similar. In the dropdown menu, choose "digital secure". It will rip a little slower, but should give you better results.

Now you'll want to configure the encoder. For the encdoder, choose "mp3 VBR", and click on "custom" for the quality.

Now try ripping.

I tried following your instructions (I have also seen these posted before and tried earlier too), but when it begins to rip, I get the "Secure Rip Report" that says that it failed to read (Quality 0%), hard errors, and unable to finish reading this track.

Does this happen with all your discs, or just this one in particular?

Unfortunately, I have tried more than ten different CDs, and all of them have this problem. They are all manufacturer's versions - none were copied or burned.

Ok, I would make sure that your CDrom has the most up to date drivers--it probably does. If so, I'd post this on the Jriver forum, along with all your system info (You can get that by going into help>system info in mc9--it will automatically copy to your clipboard.).

My dell latitude does the same with its removeable cd-rom drive. I only encode things now on my girlfriends computer and then transfer them across the network. This sounds like a cd-rom issue not a software issue.

Oddly enough my dell latitude is new so I shouldnt be having this problem, but it does everything else properly

I seem to have had nearly perfect results with my MC9/LAME ripper, but two CD's (out of 80 ripped so far) have given me problems on the last track. For some reason, MC9/LAME could not successfully rip the last track of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (Confrontation with Dooku and Closing Credits). It said tha it read it about 16 times without successful results. The rest of the disc ripped fine. No scratching was visible on the disc in that portion.

The second anomaly was the last track of Prince the Hits 1. The song 7 had minor skipping in the last minute of play. The report also showed intense re-reads for the last track. Again, no noticeable scratches of any significance in that area of the CD.

Anyway, I notice that my ripper has the most extra reads toward the end of a CD. Is the end of a CD a more sensitive zone for ripping?

Have you guys had the occasional skip in CD's that you've ripped?
