Deleting id3v1 Tags
In my 'landmark' thread, "Will this setup work with MC9?" I asked about deleting id3v1 tags. Adam wrote the following:
"Regarding tags yez, use only version 2. You can set up MC9 to delete id3v1 tags whenever it comes across them. This serves a couple of purposes, makes things cleaner (and your files a tiny, tiny bit smaller) and since every program out there reads at least v2 then you're fine. There's nothing in V1 that you really want--we all recommend to not use them."
I have yet to delete the tags. I notice that MC9 has both V1 and V2 tags on the CD's I've ripped.
How do you delete the V1 tags?
How much space have you folks saved by having only V2 tags? Is there no situation where the V1 tags would have come in handy? Is there anything in V2 tags that are MC9 dependent? Meaning, if Itunes for Windows exists and is competitive with MC9 (hard to imagine), I want to be able to change ownership smoothly.

You're not going to save much of any space. I mean w/a huge library (thousands songs) you might save a few megabytes at most (if that really).
The reason I do it is more for performance issues. If MC9 only has to write one version of tags, it will take a little less time when saving changes. Again, it might be negligble, but I've got an old PC.
So, follow the instructions in my help guide to set it up so it doesn't save them (so it deletes them).
Then, to force them to be deleted, you need to edit all your songs because it only will delete them when saving tag changes. What I do to make this happen is select all my songs (or a batch), and then enter a fake comment in the Comment field as I don't use that. Then I save Apply the change, as it adds that comment it will delete the v1 tags. Then with the same songs selected, I remove the comment and apply the changes again.
Don't worry about re-adding v1 tags back. You can just change the setting and re-add them.
Also, no program in its right might would use V1 tags anymore...

Adam / others:
After you delete the v1 tags using MC9, does that delete the tags on the saved file itself or is it something that only pertains to MC9... i.e., if I delete a bunch of v1 tags but then need to re-import the songs from my hard drive, will the v1 tags come back?

No, once you delete them per my instructions, they will be deleted from the files.
You can always get them back there by re-doing the process I outlined above. Just change the setting in MC9 for id3v1 tags to "create if necessary"
Hope that's clear.
