Considering MC9- Question

I got my 30 gig Ipod about 3 weeks ago, and love the thing. I have only dumped about 20% of my music on, but I realize I have to get my tagging in order. I used Music Match for 2 days and I hated it. It was reminiscent of my feelings towards RealAudio.

I am considering switching from EPHod over to MC-9, but I have a concern. I don't want to keep 20-30 gig of hard drive space tied up with the MP3s. I have about 50 cdrs filled with 700 meg each worth of mp3s, and I have dumped a handful of them onto the Ipod through ephpod. I wouldn't want them all on the computer just to run the program. I have another 150 cds I have to rip. Is it really the case with Media Center that all mp3 have to stay on the machine? I am not really sure if this is practical.

No, you can keep them on the ipod--but you'll have to be careful when you synch not to check the "delete files not in playlist" option, which, by the way, is the default setting for synching.

One thing to keep in mind, when you format the ipod for MC9, you're going to lose everthing on it--so if you're going to use MC9, you're going to want to format before HD space becomes an issue..

Chris is right, you don't have to keep all of your songs on the PC to use MC9, but if you're not going to, I don't see the point in switching.

The key to my love of MC9 is it's ability to create smartlists that enable me to have a fresh set of tunes daily. Without the songs on the PC, this isn't possible. I do my 1 minute re-sync every night and as I listen as work every day I like to be able play around w/my smartlists and create new fun ones. Or, stick w/one that get refreshed w/new tunes.

So, it's a media organizer as well as an iPod uploader. It's great to get all your tagging done etc too. But like MMJB need the tunes on your PC, so does MC9. You can work around it, but it's not too practical.

Me, I'd recommend you spring for a cheap hard drive. You can get a 120GB internal for < $100 these days. And you'll find that you use the space.

Yeah, gotta agree with Adam--you're better off getting more HD space...You'll be amazed how happy you'll be...

If you have an ipod malfunction--and trust me, they do happen--or worse yet, a dead ipod--and that happens too--you're going to be up that proverbial creek without a paddle...And you won't want to be paddling with your hands in the creek I'm talking about...
