New iPod-- adding songs creates only one blank & empty playlist?
Hi all,
First post, with a brand new 30G iPod I just got today. I've seen enough of MMJB before to know that I want no part of it, so I'd like to start fresh with EphPod from the start. I've got the iPod working with a Firewire card and XP, at least to the point where it gets a drive letter and I can copy files to and from it in Explorer. As suggested here, I ran the 2.0.1 updater from the CD -- but NOT the CD installation program itself. I went into Explorer, blew away the hidden ipod_control directory, then opened EphPod (2.70a) and let it recreate that directory when prompted.
However, I'm having trouble getting the iPod to actually recognize anything I copy over there. Whether I copy one song or 150, it appears to copy all of them -- I see them being copied, and then I can subsequently browse through the "hidden" directories in Windows Explorer and see that there's data out there -- but none of the songs actually show up as viewable on the iPod. Everything shows up in EphPod up in the "iPod view," but all it seems to actually do is add one single "blank" playlist, just above the default "On The Go" playlist, and that list itself is empty. I've reformatted the thing several times and I can't get it to do anything differently.
I feel like I must be overlooking something here. I'm clicking "Save Changes," and it prompts me to save everything again when I exit EphPod, but somehow those changes aren't making it. Data is obviously being copied over, but the database isn't being updated correctly. I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be GREATLY apprecated!
A.

i suspect that you are getting no directories because you haven't made any.
through ephpod, create directories on the ipod based on genre, artists, etc. also, under configeration, have ephpod create directories based on the directories on your computer where the music files come from.

Thanks for responding...unfortunately I still can't seem to make this work. I'm at a complete loss. I even tried an older version of EphPod, and it does exactly the same thing.
I finally put several albums on it with MMJB, just to make sure that SOMETHING would work. When I opened up EphPod, it of course saw everything that MMJB had put in there. I tried adding one single song to it with EphPod, and I got the same thing -- when I exited EphPod and unmounted the iPod, all the dozens of songs on it "disappeared," as far as the iPod knowing about them. All of the browse lists suddenly became empty. Once EphPod wrote to the iPod, the only evidence that anything at all had ever been written to it was, again, one single blank playlist.
I really want to make EphPod work; I like the interface as much as I despise MMJB's. This is becoming very frustrating, unfortunately.

what happens if you use ephod's function of creating a directory out of what's already on on the ipod?
also try music center 9 - they have a 30 day free trial. that might tell you if the problem seems to be the ipod or something peculiar about your ephopod settings.

Well, I finally got it working, though I don't really understand it. I ended up trying Music Center 9, which worked fine. And once Music Center had insisted in formatting the iPod for its use...it began working fine in EphPod. I don't pretend to know why that worked, but I thought I should record it here in case someone else has the same issue.
Thanks for your suggestions.
