EphPod + MP4/AAC + tagging?

Ok, I've been scratching my head on this one, trying to get it to work.

What I'd like to do is rip my CDs, pulling the tag information from CDDB or FreeDB, and convert to AAC, then wrap them to M4A files.

Ephpod is supposed to tag the files based on structure (root music folder\Artist\Album\## - Song Title.m4a), but it's not.

Alternately, I've tried tagging the files in Foobar2000, but it doesn't seem to recognize those either.

I'd really like to move away from making MP3s of everything, so if someone could suggest a sequence of software/operations I should do, I'd appreciate it!

Only way to rip and tag mp4 files is with the Sveta plugin from dbpoweramp. The only problem with this is that is is a 30 day trial, so you will have to buy it.

ephPOD will only transfer the songs, but will not update the database. I'm not sure if if ever will as the developer is off to law school, and is probably not devoting a lot of time to ephPOD, and there is a good chance that xPlay will never support it as well. The problem they have is there is no single standard for tags, so there is no way for these programs to know where to get the tagging info from. So the only way to properly transfer mp4'ds is to use a mediaplayer that supports AAC, and the only one that does it is Sveta. Hopefully by the end of the year we'll have iTunes, and perhaps MC9 will do it somethime in the future.

Maybe if he gives up on developing he'll open-source it. Since I just got my iPod yesterday, I was hoping I could do the CD conversion once and be at the format that's the best combination of small filesize and quality. For now, I'm living with 160kbps VBR MP3 files.

Either that, or iTunes better be free to Windows iPod owners.
