Newbie/Dumb physician from CA
Trying to learn how to use my new IPOD 30gb on a
Windows XP machine. My computer seems to recognize it
just fine, even assigns a drive letter, etc.
And now for the dumb question:
Does any of the music management software (XPLAY etc)
allow you to avoid installing the Apple-supplied programs
i.e IPOD manager and its ilk.
I know that MMJB has a dependency. I am looking for a
an explorer type interface without the apple middleware.
Obviously, the firmware is a given.
Appreciate any insight that the members can shed.
BTW, I have learned a great deal by reading the FAQs and
posts here. Thank you so much for this friendly forum.

Just install the firmware... you HAVE to, since the iPod comes UNFORMATTED, and the software just basically formats it for window's use... After that, you can use whatever software you want... Personally, I would never use or mention the word "Musicmatch", it's the devil... Just use ephpod, it is the best software for pc users out there... maybe until iTunes for windows later this year...

Thanks for the reply.
I have flirted with the unmentionable (MMJB).
It 'seemed' to have a non-intuitive WINTEL interface.
However, it did appear that it required the apple software
interface to 'mount' the IPOD (Hey, I've been wrong before).
Does EPHPOD use a removeable drive drag & drop paradigm?

sirkea:
You don't have to install the Apple Software. Just browse your Apple CD for a file called "Updater.exe". It should be in the Window section of the CD (can't remember where exactly).
Copy that file to you computer and Run it with the iPod connected. This will format your iPod for use w/windows and get things going.
Then, since you seem inclined towards an explorer type interface, I highly recommend you get Xplay. It's just what you are looking for, drag and drop in an explorer window. You can grab it from www.mediafour.com. They have a free trial.
The other programs (MC9 & ephpod) also don't require any of the Apple software. I personally prefer MC9, but since you're looking for a specific type of interface, Xplay is for you sir. ;)

sirkea,
At this point, Xplay is not compatible to transfer Audible files. But you should be able to use Xplay version 1.1.3 in conjunction with AudibleManager 4.0.
However, I do believe that AudibleManager does require that you install the iPod software from the disc, including MMJB. If AM works, then great. If not, you probably need to install the iPod software and MMJB.
You don't have to use MMJB, but you may need to install it in order to get AudibleManager to work. And actually, you can selectively get rig of MMJB it later, but thats a story for later.
