EphPod cannot create :\ipod_control
Hello again!
After my USB fiasco, I finally went out and bought myself a firewire card.
I just installed it, and it seems to be working ok with the iPod. My machine recognizes it and everything, so that's one step in the right direction.
However when I tried to setup EphPod, it asks to build the iPod directory structure, and when I click ok, it says it's unable to. And when I hit next anyway, just to see what would happen, a popup told me "EphPod cannot write to your iPod drive. Your copy of MacOpener or MacDrive is not working properly. Make sure that your trial copy has not expired."
I didn't think I needed MacOpener for the newer iPods... and my pod is already windows compatible, so what gives? What should I do?
I think I read somewhere on these forums that I have to go into the iPod drive and delete a folder called ipod_directory before anything will work...
But when I tried to do that, I got an error saying I can't access the drive because "the device is not ready." Did I read the advice wrong? Is there something else I'm supposed to do?
My patience is really running thin on this iPod. I've had it for a week and haven't been able to make it work right with my machine yet. I know it could be worse, but still...
Can anyone help me out?

wow, i'm not the only one with this problem?? cool. i got the exact same error as you. this is what i did:
1. tell ephpod that your C drive is your ipod
2. build the directory on your C drive
3. copy that ipod_control folder from you C drive to your ipod
4. it will tell you that you already have a ipod_control folder on your ipod, and ask you if you want to replace it (say yes, because the folder isnt' complete, otherwise ephpod wouldn't ask you to build that folder).
5. start up ephpod, click configure ephpod, and then show ephpod what drive your ipod really is.

Thanks for the advice, but still no luck.
I told Ephpod to built the directory on the C drive. Then when I tried to copy the ipod_control file to my iPod drive, it said "there is no disk in drive H. Insert a Disk and try again"
I'm getting really frustrated. Obviously the computer recognizes the iPod as a drive, or else drive letter H wouldn't even appear in my computer.
I'm really puzzled as to why NOTHING pertaining to my iPod so far has worked the way it was supposed to. If I had known it was going to be this difficult just to make it useable on my machine, I probably wouldn't have bought it. :\
Do you have any other possible workaround tips? Thanks.
Edit - I don't know if this is supposed to happen or if this information will help at all, but the iPod itself will only display the "Do not disconnect" screen when it's plugged into the computer.
# 3 Re: EphPod cannot create :\ipod_control
hmmm.. before i updated to 2.0.1 my ipod drive wouldnt show up in my computer unless it was plugged it and mounted. and then it would dissapear after i unmounted it or disconnected it.
however, after 2.0.1, the ipod drive stays in my computer, however, will say "please insert a disk intro drive I" when i try to open it up without the ipod being connected.
so, i don't think your ipod is mounted/connected at the moment. your ipod will have to be displaying "do not disconnect" before you can open up your ipod drive or copy anything into that. so make sure your connections are good, and then it will work.

EDIT:
I'm so sorry, I must be overtired or something.
I mistook which drive the iPod was... I think everything's ok now. I'll keep you posted.
And THANK YOU very much for the advice.
/excited that her iPod might actually work now.

well if your ipod is showing up in my computer, how did you try to create the directory in it with ephpod?
anyway, if you have ipod manager installed, make sure "enable disk mode" is checked, otherwise it defeintely wont' show up in my computer.
yesterday i was in the exact same position as you. i couldnt get this #### thing to work for the life of me. then i just uninstalled ALL apple software except for the manager (because i kept getting an error when it tried ejecting the ipod thru my computer, but manager worked). i then restored my ipod using updater and then used ephpod. then i proceeded to update my firmware to 2.0.1, and now i find that i CAN eject my ipod thru my computer and that ipod manager doesn't work. so now i might just uninstall that. it's unfortunate tho, it was nice to be able to mount the ipod without having to undock/dock it.

Folks:
If you ever run into this problem again the solution is simple: Access the iPod in My Computer, then delete the ipod_control folder. It's hidden, so if you don't see it, make sure you have viewing of hidden files enabled (Tools>Folder Options, on the View tab).
Then fire up ephpod. It'll automatically create the folder structure for you. It just can't do it when it already exists.

I can't access the directory, it asks me to format the drive... which I'm afraid will #### up my iPod.
# 9 Re: EphPod cannot create :\ipod_control
formatting your ipod will just erase all the information and set it back to the factory settings. and if you can't view the ipod_control folder, go to "view" and select show hidden files or something to that nature.

It's probably asking you to format the iPod Drive because you haven't converted it to a WiPod yet (from HFS+ format to FAT32).
You can just do a "quick format", then fire up ephpod. You'll be all set.

"Cannot create file ?E:\ipod_control\Music\F08\3048.mp3?. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"
I think I've tried everything mentioned in this thread. I have a Windows iPod (not the latest, thinnest version, but the one before that). I used EphPod on an older PC, and it worked fine, but I've been trying to get it to work on my new computer (also Windows XP), and I keep getting the above error message (with different numbers) from ephpod while I'm adding directories.
- I have enabled disk use.
- I have version 1.2.6 on the iPod.
- Each time I sync, anywhere from 10-80 songs will sync successfully (I think) before then I get the error message.
- I have done the Pretend that my C drive is the ipod, and copy over the blank ipod_control file over to my actual ipod trick. That seemed to help. More files would transfer before I got the error message, but ultimately, I still got the error message.
- I had MMJB and the Windows iPod software installed. I then removed both. In both cases, I had the same problems syncing.
- When the freeze happens, I have to cancel the synchronization, close ephpod, and start again.
I think I spent five hours yesterday fighting this thing. Can any of you wiser podders help?

wow i got that same error message too a few times before. however i can't remeber waht exactly i did to solve it.. basically, i think i delted the whole ipod_control folder, then restored it. keep trying that, i remember it tellingme i couldn't delete it tho.... or just try to restore it.

nyc:
Restore your iPod, delete the iPod_control folder and start all over.

What I have never understood about this problem is why Ephpod doesn't simply delete this folder as necessary when it sets things up the first time.

because what if you already have hundreds of mp3s on there? they'd be deleted.....but i do agree, it should be an option.

It would have been nice if EphPod had flagged this issue in its own FAQs or on the site, as it's one which pretty much every new user must encounter.
Anyway, a big up to the ipodloung forums and the super moderators for making my ipod purchase and installation such a pain-free process. If it hadn't been for you guys, I'd probably have run out and bought a new firewire card plus an upgrade to WinXP by now!
Instead, I have a two-thirds filled brand new 15gb 3G iPod and it is, as we say in England, the mutt's nuts. :D
