Use of playlists

First off, I'm a new iPod user (2 weeks) and I'm a little confused about playlists. I have an MP3 directory structure like this:

"\My Synched Music\<artist>\<album>\<songX>.mp3"

Occasionally there is a third level for CD 1 and CD2 etc of multiple CD sets.

At present I use tools to create a playlist in each of the lowest level directories i.e the ones that containing <songX>.mp3 and these get transferred and work fine on my iPod using ephPod.

What I don't understand is how I could make a playlist (presumably at the top level "\My Synched Music") which contained various songs from all over my collection.

As I understand it the iPod does not retain the original directory structure so I don't see how this could work.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,

Mark

When I manually create playlists I simply give the full path of the file that you need transfered. So my files are in E:\ipod. As an example E:\ipod\m-flo - Planet Shining\01 - Interude (Intro).mp3. If I have a bunch of files in another directory simply give the full path to those files. I usually will just pull the random songs from my mp3 directory, so H:\My Music\mp3\d[di_] - daria\01 - tuki hi.mp3. It doesn't matter where the songs are, just give the full path name to them and ephPOD, or another syncer, will transfer them over and update the database.

Question: assuming you already have your whole music collection on your iPod, will EphPod avoid duplicating mp3 files regardless of playlist (and path used when creating the playlist)?

In other words, I assume I can create multiple playlists sharing the same tracks without those tracks being duplicated on my iPod, right?

Listen, while I've got your attention, another question... ;)

My iPod is coming on Monday, I'm putting the finishing touches to my music collection ready to be uploaded to the iPod.

At the moment, I have everything carefully filed in nested directories according to genre, then artist, then album. Now, if I understand correctly, the iPod won't recognise the directory structure (though it'll be useful for my synching purposes).

OK, here's the question: can you create nested playlists on the iPod or will I have to scroll down a long list of all my playlists every time I want to find one?

Thing is, I want to find a way of emulating my directory structure on the iPod itself.

If you think it would help, I could repost this as a new thread.

None that I no of. What ever you use to sync will randomly put all of you songs into 20 directories, so your nice little nested directory structure will be gone. Also there is no way to add a nested directory structure to the menu options. All you can do is give nice descriptive names that will fit on the screen.

Thanks Bill, bah, that's what I was afraid of. Seems remarkably unsophisticated database management... :(

Guess I'll just have to spend another few hours creating playlists in winamp then... gonna be a pain scrolling through all of them every time I want to play something.

You might want to trial MC9, since it is probably the best app for creating playlists for the iPod.

Thanks, I might at that.

Do you know much about ID3-v2 tags? If you create your own genres, will they be recognised by the iPod? I'm using idtagedit to try to 'reclassify' all my stuff according to my own genres (god I hate their built-in choice of genres) but (and I may be missing something) this doesn't seem to work.

You can define your own genres. I did it directly in Ephpod instead of using ID3v2 tags, but I've got Blue Man Group classified as "Banging on Pipes" in the Genre list. :D

Excellent.

Well, gentlemen, I appear to be sorted.
