starting an ipod

hi! i am getting an ipod for my b-day in like 3 weeks. i had a 20 gb rioriot on another computer but, that computer crashed, so i started to re-encoed my cd's on this computer. i got through about 5, when i found out that i was getting an ipod. so i stoped becasue realONE player isnt for the ipod.
i would like to know any problems that i can avoid from the start or alternative softwear for encoding my cd's to AAC format and gettting them on the a new 3rd gen ipod.
any help wqould be great,

If you want to use AAC the best is to use Sveta, from www.dbpoweramp.com , which is the easiest way. You can also use Nero to rip/encode, or a ripper and an aac encoder from rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org, and Ephpod to upload to your iPod. But IMHO it is best to use Sveta for AAC, but beware, AAC is in early stages on the PC plateform, for example there is no standard tagging system, but nero's and sveta's are compatible, so try it before you use it...
