lost tags?

hi all,

i painstakingly updated tags in all my songs on the hard disk, then wiped the ipod clean, and recopied all songs. now, ephod doesnt show me tags on many many songs. in most cases the genre tags are gone.
syncing doesnt help either.

has anyone come across this? is there any solution to this?

thanks

What program did you use to initially update all your songs and tag them?

when i ripped, i used musicmatch and freedb. but i corrected the tags using daphyx mp3 explorer. the tags shows up correctly on 5 different mp3 tagger programs.

do the songs show up in the correct genre on the iPod?

no, the songs dont show up in the correct genre. for example, if ephpod shows the genre tag as empty, then i cant browse to that song/album by genre, because there is no "" genre.

I had the same problem when my sister loaded her messy collection of singles. I don't know what the difference was, but I didn't get any problems.

Personally I retagged her songs in ephpod. Probe for lost music helps identifying the untagged, and verify db does too. There probably is a better way though.

Whatever you do though, try to avoid "rebuild db from iPod" because that'll mess up the tags even more, and you'll have to retag all over again. It seems the ephpod DB and the iPod dbs are different.

antwerp, remember in ephpod that it doesn't edit tags--it just edits the values in the iPod's database. It'll attempt to edit the tags, but as I remember from my days using that program it wasn't very sucessful at it.

akarnk: don't know what to tell you. I would suggest that you only use id3v2 tags. Delete all your id3v1 tags on the files on your PC, then wipe the iPod clean and reupload again.

... and how does one delete the ID31 tags?? I've re-tagged most of my collection with ID32 tags ... does that overwrite the ID31 tags?? Eric

You delete id3v1 tags w/a tag editor. You can get id3-tagit (www.id3-tagit.de, it's free) and do it w/one click. Highlight all your tunes and click the delete id3v1 tag button (it's a red "X" w/"id3v1" after it.

Adam ... thanks for the tip, but here's what I posted on a more recent ID3 tag amnesia thread ... any insights??
-----------
I don't have an answer, BUT, I've retagged all of my songs via K-MP3 (a cool free utility that changes your ID tags via the freecd database online) so that they are ID3v2 tags. I then deleted the ID3v1 tags from the files.

... BUT Ephpod still has 3 different spellings for 'The Beatles' (The Beatle, Beatles and The Beatles) ... even though the tags are consistent.

When I update them via Ephpod, everything is fine .. until I sync the ipod again ... all the changes are lost.

I just want to organize my MP3s so that they are clear on the iPod.

OK, that's a little strange. One thing to make sure is that when you change a take on a file on your PC you delete that file from your iPod and reupload it.

Unfortunately ephpod doesn't update tag data when you re-sync, you need to delete the song and manually reupload it. Only MC9 and Xplay (I think) can do that.

Also remember when you change "tag" data in ephpod you're not changing tags, you're just changing values in the iPod's database.

Not sure about the program you're using. I'd download id3tagit (www.id3-tagit.de) and check the tags in there as well, just to make sure that the program you're using is doing things "legit". :)
