USB driver for Win98 .. anone have WinME & ipod with USB?

Hiya

I'm trying to get my ipod working with Windows 98SE but Apple in their wisdom have decided not to support it. The ipod itself (30gb) is working fine with a pcimcia firewire card but I would like to use it on a number of different computers (win98) which do not have firewire.

When I connect the ipod with the usb cable Windows finds new hardware but cannot find a suitable driver ... therefore I was wondering if anyone is using Windows ME with the new USB cable can send me the drivers :) Ideally I would like to end up with a small zip file which how hold all the basic driver files for Win98.

Maybe someone has already managed to do this ...

the drivers are located on your windows 98 (Second edition) or windows me installation cd-rom.

Maybe I'm missing something here but I'm talking about the driver for the ipod itself (iPod USB Interface) ... when I ask windows to check the windows cd it can't find the driver ... where can I find it ... which directory? even better what are the file names of the files?

Many thanks

they're located in cab files in the \WIN98 directory on your original Windows 98(2nd Ed) CD-ROM. Windows will want to install a "USB Mass Storage" driver and it provides that.

I don't keep a list of the file names, sorry dude.

side note: no one should be sending you these drivers as they are on the original windows cd and are not distributable (legally).

AMG's right eyez73, just so you're clear there are not "iPod specific" drivers. The drivers windows uses to access the iPod are just the generic external hard drive drives (USB Mass Storage).

So, there's nothing needed other than what you have on your 98 CD.

How do I install these "USB Mass Storage" drivers? I can't for the life of me figure out how to find them on the Windows 98SE CD-ROM, or what to tell the "add new hardware" wizard... I do have a USB Zip drive working on this machine, so USB mass storage doesn't seem to be totally impossible, but I can't find any "generic" USB mass storage support.
Are you sure Windows 98SE even has this?

Is there anybody out there who actually uses the iPod over USB (1.1 or 2.0, either is fine as far as I'm concerned) with Windows 98SE? In the forums I've come across scattered comments to the effect that it can be done, but none of those posters actually give step-by-step instructions on how to set it up, nor do they even claim to have gotten it to work themselves, so I'm a bit skeptical... (But I'd love to know if it can be done nonetheless :-) )

Tokken: Yes I do. Please read this thread and get the driver from it http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32462&highlight=usb+1.1

It works beautifully with ml_ipod

Thanks redx113 -- my 3G 40GB iPod and my Mom's Win98SE PC are on speaking terms now. No problems whatsoever. :-)
Thanks again!
