"Cant unmount iPod" during 2.0.1 update

It looks like it began doing the update but then I got a "Can't unmount iPod" message in the message box of the 2.0.1 updater.

The only thing I could do was close the window.

But then I couldn't unmount the iPod myself because some other application was using it, so I was forced to reboot.

When I finally unmounted it, the iPod About box says it has the 2.0.1 update. But since it quit in the middle of it, I'm not sure if what I have is any good.

I tried to run the updater again, but the Update button is greyed out.

Does anyone know why this error occurs and how I can fix it? Is my firmware update any good? (So far it looks OK).

Thank you!

There is a similar thread under iPod Windows General.

Did the can't unmount come after the firmware was flashed on the iPod? By that I mean did you see a progress bar on the iPod slowly go up and finish and eventually go away?

If so, then you're fine. Unmounting is just the final step where it disconnects the iPod. Pulling it out was all right. Done it before myself.

If it didn't work you most likely would have ended up w/a Folder w/an exclamation mark on your iPod and it wouldn't work.

You can try it again, Update isn't allowed because you already have 2.0.1 on there (so there's nothing to update). Just do a restore. If you get the same error, make sure you don't have any anti-virus programs running before you do it.

While doing the 2.0.1 update, the progress bar moved up but stopped part of the way through. I don't remember how far it got but definitely not all the way (maybe 3/4 or 2/3).

I waited and waited. Eventually the message box said "Can't unmount iPod". I kept on waiting in case it was retrying.

Eventually, I had enough but I got an error when trying to unmount the iPod manually because some other program was trying to unmount it (probably the ipod manager).

I tried to kill the task, but got Access Is Denied. So I rebooted. After it automounted, I could unmount it properly.

The About box on the iPod says 2.0.1 and I've used it quite a few times since then and it seems to be just fine.

I also tried restoring. I get the same problem. The progress bar moves *almost* to the end and finally says "Can't unmount iPod".

OK, from your post, I think you didn't understand me (but I'm not sure). I meant the progress bar on the iPod that shows up. Not the one on the Updater program.

Do another restore. As long as the progress bar on the iPod completes then you're fine.

Ah, I didn't notice a progress bar on the iPod itself, I was watching the one in the updater.

Two questions: how do I do a 'restore'?

and if I do a restore, will I be able to re-install the 2.0.1 update? (I tried to do the update again immediately after the first attempt, but the button is greyed out.)

Thanks for the help!

I mentioned this on the other thread, but will repeat it here.

I had the same problem. I fought it for about 2 weeks and could not understand why other people did not have the same problem. While I was getting abnormal operations when doing a restore, it always appeared to work (the iPod worked fine). I was not comfortable with the abnormal operations, so I continued to try to solve it.

In the end I fixed it and now everything is fine. I un-installed all of the software I received from Apple. This included MusicMatch, iPod Manager, everything.

I did a minimal install for 3rd party products following Kurt?s instructions. This means I only selectively installed the software from Apple. I specifically did not install MusicMatch.

When I did my next restore, everything went perfectly. No more problems.

Note: I use MC9, so not having MusicMatch was no problem. If you use MusicMatch, this approach will obviously not work. My theory, however, is that there are intermittent problems with the install of the Apple software. My approach fixed it, but I may have had the same success just by uninstalling everything and reinstalling everything.

What I can tell you from experience, however, is that you will probably have to start by getting everything uninstalled if you are ever going to fix this.

Best of luck,

Randy

# 7 Re: "Cant unmount iPod" during 2.0.1 update
ech3: I think you're a little confused on the difference between Restore and Update. It's really simple actually:

Update lets you add a new firmware to the iPod w/o removing all of your songs

Restore re-adds the firmware and also deletes all your tunes (and formats the drive).

So, since your iPod already has 2.01 on it, you won't be able to update. You can't update from 2.01 to 2.01. Eh? Doesn't make sense.

So, all you can to is a Restore. Just just click the Restore button.

Try following Randy's recommendations. Uninstall iPod Manager...then try it.

I uninstalled everything. Then reinstalled ONLY the 2.0.1 updater.

When I clicked on the Restore button, the progress bar in the updater went up to 99% and then stopped. After a while it said "Can't unmount iPod". Same as before.

Also, there was NO progress meter on the iPod itself. It just kept flashing the "Do not disconnect" warning all the while.

While this is just my opinion, I think the problem I had was caused by the MusicMatch install. Because I did a reinstall without MusicMatch mine was fixed. Maybe I blame MusicMatch too much, but all my problems went away when I removed it from the PC.

My guess is the registry is messed up. Even if you still want to use MusicMatch, if you uninstall it and reinstall it your problem may go away.

I never had MusicMatch on my machine. I did a minimal install and went straight to Ephpod.

Oh well, the thing seems to be working fine. And if unmounting was the last step, then the 2.0.1 update should be just fine.

Told you I probably blamed MusicMatch too much.

Anyway, when I had the problem, it was always after the firmware was flashed, so other than bothering me everything worked fine. My guess is that you do not have a real problem with the iPod either.

Hope you get it resolved, I'm out of ideas.

You guys having problems; are you sure that your Ipod is powered on your firewire? Mine wasnt and it did all of these nasty things until I plugged it in the power! Also, teh updater wont be able to unmount teh ipod if you are running MC9! You need to unmount it yourself! It does work - but you need to plug it in!!!!!
