But any one got a detailed breakdown of what the
'updates' supposedly do?
Improved backlighting - what was wrong with it?
Has the song stopping midway been fixed?
(sorry, at work, can't check it yet)

Just installed the latest firmware and so far so good...
There was an annoying bug in 2.0 that would delay the FF button. If you pressed the FF button a few times in a row a delay would occur by the 3rd or 4th press. This bug appears to be gone in 2.0.1

No problems here on my (second -- first was a lemon) 30GB iPod running the new 2.0.1 firmware and syncing with iTunes 4.x.
Pod On!
# 4 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Well, to keep the trend going, I have had zero problems so far myself as well.
I guess if you're gonna have a "problem thread", this is the kind to have!! :D

As to the backlighting, there seems to be a minor issue. On 2.0, I had my contrast jacked up a bit so it was readable at odd angles when it was laying in the car. After updating, I nearly freaked out because my screen now exhibited all kinds of strange smears, especially in the upper right hand corner. I took the contrast back down and it disappeared. It definitely looks better now at the default level than it used to, and if I'm not mistaken...slightly bluer!
# 6 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Hello people, I'm new here and I've killed my ipod... or seriously mamed, maybe:
Although I've found much information which is closely related to my problem, I am still unable to wake my ipod from it's coma.
Here's what happened: I recently made the "switch" to Mac by buying a G4 PowerBook 867 and the latest (G3?) 10GB ipod, so life was sweet for a couple of weeks. Last night I updated the ipod to V.2.01 and it was working fine. Today, I switched on the Powerbook, and impatiently plugged in the ipod before the machine had finished starting up, assuming it wouldn't do any harm (Doh!). The ipod displayed the disk scan icon and I left it to scan. After hours of not being able to get past the apple logo screen, I can now access the firewire disk mode but am unable to update or restore the ipod as it WILL NOT MOUNT. I've tried using disk utility to mount it to desktop but still no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions, cures... or condolences?
I really don't want to send my baby away for repair so soon, it'll probably take ages!
Kids, the moral of the story is:
Don't be impatient, wait for machines to do their business before plugging other things into 'em, right?

# 7 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
You updated your iPod to V.2.01 for the Mac, right?
# 8 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I installed the correct update. I used the 'ipod updater' after checking for new updates using 'software update' in system preferences (OS X 10.2.1). It was working fine for a while.
Maybe I should take it back to the store today, but as I live in the UK, I expect a replacement might take a long time.
Anyone's suggestions are most welcome, I love my ipod and can't bare to see him like this. :(

I'm going to move this to the problem reports for 2.0.1 thread.
# 10 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Moved? Ok, fair enough.
(There goes your problem-free "problem thread", guys.)

# 11 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
When I ran the 2.01 updater, it wouldn't finish. Interestingly, the updater would not force quit the normal way and I had to use a little more effort to stop it. I eventually had to pull the ipod out of the dock - against the warning - and all was fine.
I think the installer hung because of a problem from earlier that morning - which I don't understand. I think I left the pod in the dock attached to the computer overnight. It updated fine when I first turned on the Mac in the morning but then when I took it to another room, it showed only the Apple logo. When I attempted to reset, it showed no battery bars and a warning that the battery was discharged. I then took it back to the dock and switched the cable to the wall outlet charger. It showed it was charging and that it was almost completely charged (4 bars showing). After that, I ran the 2.01 updater and it hung.
Well, no harm, no foul. I've never had to reset my 30gig before and processes do hang.
Interestingly, I took the ipod in the car for a trip through Maine and NH yesterday. Ran a 3+ hour playlist - no jumping around -and the ipod was only down one bar.

Hmm.. strangely coincidental:
when I try to run the updater, it doesn't work and is difficult to quit, but I believe that's because the ipod isn't mounted (and I can't get it to mount). And mine too was working fine the evening after the update, at first use next day, apple logo only!

# 13 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
there's a long thread about this at the apple ipod forum, apparently a lot of people's ipods have completely died after the update to 2.0.1 yikes!
# 14 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Oh, really? Thanks, I'll check it out.

# 15 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Sometimes my center 'select' button does not work for hours at a time. EXTREMELY annoying. Resetting et al does not work.
# 16 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
This sometimes happens with mine - sometimes all the buttons freeze.
I find switching the hold button on & off helps.
Good luck.
# 17 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
I have version 2.02 on my iPod that arrived today so perhaps Apple will release this version soon.
# 18 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Can you tell me where the apple ipod forum is? I just updated my iPod with the 2.1 update and I'm locked out of my iPod. I have the little lock symbol in the display, but my HOLD is not activated. I've toggled it on and off a number of times and it hasn't worked. I have restarted my computer a number of times and the iPod doesn't mount on my desktop nor open up iTunes. I can't mount the iPod from any software that I know and the Updater doesn't recognize an iPod being attached.
Any suggestions from anyone here would be helpful too. Thanks.

Ipod & Itunes
On three ocasions itunes has delected my library and i'm having to create smartlists etc again and again.
Does anybody know if it's possible to copy smartslist directly from the ipod and place them back into Itunes?
or even synchronize what i have on my ipod with whats on my hard drive?? so everything that's on the ipod comes restores back onto my hard drve?? including most of all playlists?
# 20 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
i think this updater is a mess and apple needs to look into this!!
So far, the battery doesnt charge properly...The ipod always states that the charge is complet and when i take the ipod out of the dock, the charge isnt even halfway full.
also
my songs stops playing while in use but the buttons and other fuctions still works. i have to play around with the buttons for the music to start playing again.
All these issues has started ever since i upgraded to the new updater.
# 21 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
the battery charge is measured in a different way and although it only shows half full after a full charge if you leave it, you should see the battery meter increase as it stabalises.
# 22 Re: iPod Software 2.0.1: Problem Reports
Phew!
Thank god for that... After the second charge on my new ipod i disconnected it and it was only showing a couple of bars and I was panicking that I had a dodgy battery or something! It's true though... the battery meter soon shows full.
