Firmware and Ephpod

I read that there is a firmware update out there, excuse my ignorance but what is firmware?

I have a 30gig and use Ephpod and didn't download anything like that, I just ran updater and went to town with Ephpod. Was it on the unit from the factory? Do I want/need this update?

Thanks

Firmware is the hardware level ROM (read only memory) based software that is imbedded within the hardware and controls the features of the product. A firmware upgrade makes some change to this ROM and that is what the updater program does. If flashes (updates) the ROM with the new hardware program instructions. You should update the IPOD to the latest firmware version because there maybe features or bug fixes that are included in the new firmware

Ephpod is a software product that syncs the ipod with your PC, it does not update the firmware in the IPOD.

Hope this helps!
