How can I change the LAME version in MC9?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for being a great community of audiophiles (and gadget freaks - just like I am!).

I have a question abou the LAME encoder used in MC9:

I've heard that version 3.90.3 or something was the preferred version.

I've tried to download it but the general link is broken...

How shall I install it if I get a hold of it?

Thanks in advance!

Here is the link, with links to other links that link to some other places, but if you diligently go through this thread, I think, if you are strong enough, if you are wise enough, if you are obsessive compulsive enough, and not overly medicated, you'll be able to get this to work...Good Luck!!

I'm not an expert on this stuff by any stretch of the imagination, but what I did is to download Lame 3.90.3 from here (http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/files/lame-3.90.3.zip), rename the Lame.exe file installed by the Media Center mp3 encoder to Lame.exe.OLD and then install the Lame 3.90.3 in its place. Ripping in secure digital mode and then encoding with --alt-preset standard should give you results comparable to using EAC and Lame, but this way you stay in MC for everything.

Hope that helps.

Only thing is, if you're going to use LAME as an external encoder, you want the 3.90.2 version--it's the last version where the presets have been optimized...I don't think there's much of an advantage to using 3.90.3 over the MC9 LAME encoder...

Hmm. I went with 3.90.3 based on what I read in this thread over at Hydrogen Audio: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?act=ST&f=15&t=478&st=0&

Ok, here's the deal: that's a modification of the LAME encoder--but the 3.90.2 is the last version that the main LAME guru actively participated in, and it was the last time he (or anyone else to my knowledge) optimized the presets. I doubt many people would be able to tell the difference, but in most people's opinion over at hydrogenaudio, version 3.90.2 is considered the "best" version for these reasons...So if you're going to use an external encoder, I'd recommend 3.90.2, or just using the MC9 LAME encoder...

Thanks for the info. My question now is where to get the 3.90.2 build. The only one listed at http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/mp3.html is the 3.90.2 Special Build that appears to only run in --alt-preset standard mode. Is this the one I want or is there another place where I can download it?

thanks!

You can download EAC/LAME (with LAME version 3.90.2) here:

http://www.chrismyden.com/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=Elite_DAE&file=painless

Then use this LAME encoder as your external encoder (Instructions on how to set this up as an external encoder through MC9 are in the link in my first post in this thread).

OK, thanks for all the replies! The links still do not work for me (something about HTTP header?)...

But, can't i just swap the encoder dlls? Or do I need to first uninstall MC9's and then add the new one through the plug-in manager?

N.

The link to the site (the chrismyden site) should work fine. You can't add the encoder directly into the plugin manager; it "finds" it in your computer as an external device. If you download EAC/LAME in the link posted above (you can download just the 3.90.2 encoder if you'd like, but you might as well download both), and follow the instructions on how to set it up as an external encoder, it should work with know problem...

I'm a bit confused. If I use Digital Secure mode for ripping in MC and want to use Lame 3.90.2 for encoding, is it necessary to set it up as an external encoder or can I just replace the Lame.exe file in the MC directory with the 3.90.2 exe file? Will MC then use this version of Lame? That's what I've been doing with 3.90.3 (see above) and it has seemed to work fine. Just didn't know if there was some advantage to setting it up as an external encoder.

There was a time when you couldn't do it, so I've always used it as an external encoder (it's worked just fine that way). Go ahead and give it a shot with 3.90.2, but Jriver really frows on those type of modifications though (or at least they used to, but it seems to have gotten less stringent lately, someone else is doing something similar with AAC and they didn't get too worked up about it...).
