Before try

I'm looking for software writing composer information to iPod database. I got a suggestion from moderators to try XPlay and I did. However, XPlay just got frozen when I tried to access iPod (I have 3rd generation iPod), so I uninstalled it. The next item in my list is MC9, however I hate to install any new software, so can somebody confirm that MC9 works with 3rd generation iPod and capable to store composer information? Thanks.

The answers are yes to both--and you can trial it as well for free for thirty days...

Yes and Yes. I use it and it stores the composer tag.

You might find it very handy as it's an all in one tool to help you manage your tunes on your PC and a ton of other features.

Note: that you will most likely have to "reformat" the iPod for use w/MC9, this will wipe all your tunes off of it. You'll have to do this once the first time you use it.

I'd like to say thank you all who recommend MC9. It's awesome program and UI is top notch. Now I fixed couple problems in my software and added composers support. This is awesome forum!

I detect another member of the MC9 fan club ... welcome. I too found MC9 via my desire to utilize the Composer tag. Even though I make use of a small percentage of MC9 possibilities, I agree with you - it's an amazing program. Makes the ipod even more fun to use.

Smartlists, smartlists, smartlists, smartlists....nummy,nummy :D :D

If you haven't already, wait until you get a look at the new version (9.1). It's an unbelievable change. Even better UI :)
I don't recommend it if you're new to MC9, as it's buggy right now, but man is it nifty.

Well, heck, here's a screenshot (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01/images/mc9.gif).

Oh, and did I mention smartlists? ;)

So - in your considered opinion - how buggy is 9.1? My reason for asking is that I've just reformatted my hard drive and am in the process of re-installing/configuring and MC9 is first on my list for tomorrow. Should I stick with 9.089 (or whatever the current number is) or move up to 9.1.2 ... don't you just hate that kind of question??

I've not had many (any?) significant issues with the many versions of MC9 I installed, and I'm pretty comfortable with various computer 'issues' (ie, I dont' expect perfection, especially from beta software) - but with this "fresh start" I figured I'd ask the question.

And on a separate note (perhaps should be a separate thread) - what are the pro's & cons of having one's primary music stored on a separate, external drive from the main (internal) computer harddrive. How do folks manage music as the collection grows so large that it's taking up too much space on the main drive (we're talking 48GB laptop - sizable, but relative to desktop possibilities, pretty modest). I'm thinking of adding a FireLite 60GB dedicated mainly to music & photos - but I'm wondering if that's a good way to go.

thanks for all your help-

Hmmmm, to upgrade or not. Well, here's the deal w/MC9 and how they handle betas. They pretty much put out a new build every day. That means downloading and installing MC9 once a day. If you're up for that than we can continue... ;)

Bugginess. So far, there haven't been many for me. Actually just two. But it can cause you to have problems. For example, the other night I downloaded my nightly version, installed and did my nightly sync. BAM! No artists on the iPod. It played fine, but no artist information. So I was stuck for one day until they fixed that.

Now there's is another little problem. Smartlists aren't getting automatically updated. They're going to have a fix for that one tonight. Small inconvenience, I just had to delete a playlist off of my iPod before doing a sync.

I'm sure there are a number of other bugs, but I primarily use it for tunes w/my iPod. The new look is fantastic. I love it. But go w/what you feel comfortable doing.

Typically, if they break something you can either reinstall the last version that worked and they will fix the problem in a day or so.

Now, regarding your tunes and storage. You should be able to use an external drive, just make sure your connection is fast enough (at least firewire). I've never done it. I have a second internal HDD that I use, but being on a laptop your can't do that. But I don't see a reason why it won't work.

Adam New UI looks interesting, however I think that using many small windows isn't good for a user, since you have very limited view. Anyway, let me try it first, I can be mistaken. What about auto update feature? I can't check it right now, but I'm curious should I try to download a new build or already installed version can update itself.

If you want to try version 9.1 you have to download it and install it over your existing version. Auto update won't work because it's still in beta.

Backup you MC9 library before installing it.

Oh, I was just showing one view (with many windows), there are other views w/fewer windows. That's the beauty of it. And if you don't like what they've designed for you you can create your own views.
