Does MC9 require resident apps/services to run?
Does MC9 use any resident apps/services to run in the background when it isn't open? I'd like to have as "clean" a system as I can, which basically means I'm tentative about programs that always have some component running even when I'm not using the program. I don't mind having to manually start up a program when I plug in the iPod -- how does MC9 work in this regard? Just how "low profile" is it when it's not running?
Thanks,
Larry

Nope, the only thing that will run in the background is Media Server but, that only starts if you ask it to.

Aye, hehe.
Media Center ships as a suite of software, each individual .exe's. Like the good Doctor says, Media Server is one of these, and will only run if you tell it to. It's the only program that would/could run automatically when you start up your machine.
Other than that, if you close an app, including MC9 itself, there are no open process running (I'm looking in the task manager now... no sign of MC anywhere) from that exe anymore.
MC9 doesn't even have the option to run an "agent" like Quicktime or MusicMatch has... at least, I don't think it does.

Ok, this is like the billionth thread I've linked today, but here is the media server thread:

Warning: The surgeon general has determined that the Media Server is highly addictive. It's effects on your health are unknown, but recognized effects to date include a substantial increase in late night music management. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it has, however, been determined to be safe. Consult with your physician before beginning any forays into the media server to help determine if it's right for you.

I almost forgot about another mini-app that's included in the MC9 suite: Media Scheduler.
It's another app that you can choose to launch at startup. It can do things like record TV at a given time, start playback of a playlist or etc at a given time, and reclaim file associations if lost. It's the closest thing MC9 has to an "agent" and runs silently in the system tray, but by default it is not enabled.
