MC 9 -vs- Ephpod
Hi,
I have been using Ephpod since i got my ipod, and was just wondering if anyone could tell me why MC9 is better, and why i should switch.
I like Ephpod and its Free!! but i would certainly be willing to try out MC 9, if experienced users of it tell me what the advantages are.
Thanks alot!!

(not that it really matters - but for anyone wondering why the smiley face? - clicked it by mistake and didn't see a way to 'take it back').
I'll chime in with my $0.02 as I switched from EphPod to MC9 this winter. I'd heard of MC9 from various folks here in the lounge who were singing its praises. What sold me first was that it was the only ipod application which utilized the "composer" tag and I really wanted that to help better organize my classical collection.
Compared to EphPod (which I used happily to transfer music to my ipod after realizing that the MMJB ipod plugin was such a dud), MC9 in simply a much more powerful and fully featured program. There are others here who can go into more details, what I like about it is the infinite ways I can organize my music AND the playlist/smartlist possibilities (I'll let Adam wax eloquent here :) ). I compare MC9's organizing power to a database - once the data's there, you can create multiple ways to look at it.
There is an unavoidable learning curve, and it helps alot if one's music has been tagged and collected in an organized fashion (otherwise there may be some cleaning up work needed to take advantage of MC9).
If you take the plunge, there's a boatload of help available both here and at the jriver/MC9 forums. Like others here, I've become a convert. Which is not to say there's anything wrong with EphPod - I found it very satisfactory for the relatively simply task of transferring music back and forth to my ipod.

You've got a thirty day free trial to decide if you like it, and tons of help here at the lounge to help with the learning curve. I would STRONGLY recommend you read Adam's help guide to get you started--it will save you a ton of time in the long run.

Smartlists...mmmmm, nummy, nummy smartlists.... :D :D
Well said rfaison. Don't have much to add but...
The iPod plugin was developed with a ton of input from the user community. Steve over at JRiver essentially said: "OK, guys, what should this thing do?".
Then we all got to give our input.
Advantages (aside from smartists and other stuff rfaison mentioned):
1. When you sync, it can automatically update the song "tag" information on the iPod without having to re-upload the entire file. Ephpod needs to reupload the hole file. This can be a major pain when editing batches of files (like genre changes)
2. Speed, it's just plain the fastest out there.

Great info thanks all.
I will definately try it out, seems like j.river really care about the ipod community.
Just a shame it costs so much.

Was hoping you'd chime in as I knew I'd learn something - especially about the more technical side of these programs, which I'm still piecing together in my little brain.
