Smartlists/Play lists: by file?

I'm probably missing something basic, but I'd like to use MediaCenter to always synch a particular folder with my iPOD. I use "MY MUSIC". How can I set MC to synch all the songs in "My Music" folder?
Thanks!

OK, well, first off you've gotta understand how MC9 works. I've thrown a little help guide together that you might want to check out here (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01). It's written w/the iPodder in mind

MC9 works by adding all of your music to it's internal database. It doesn't copy your files, it just creates a database that points to your files. From there you can listen, tag, edit, make playlists and smartlists, all sorts of stuff.

So, first off you need to import your music (or any other media for that matter) into MC9.

Then, you can sync w/your iPod. When you sync you select playlists that you want added. MC9 will add those playlists as well as the files. There is a default smartlist that's already made for you call "All Music". Just sync w/this one and all your tunes will be on the iPod.

Again, check out the help file I posted, it'll walk you through the step-by-step.

And play around w/smartlists...they changed the way I listen to my iPod.

Have fun and welcome to the 'lounge.

Hey Adam...thanks for your help. I'd previously checked out your helpfile, which is extraordinarily well-written.

I've got about everything figured out...but I'm still confused about something. When I have MC "update my library", it searches for all my media files, and adds lots of unwanted clips to my music files (like windows "event sounds", etc). I see I can select those and delete them from the library (without deleting them from the hard drive).

However, if I now add additional songs to "my music", do I have to tell MC to "update my library" again, thereby adding back all those unwanted audio files?

Finally, if I use the playlist/smartlist "all music" choice, does "all music" refer to the "audio" list in the MC tree?

Thanks again! I'm almost there!

Hey RGHessel, glad you liked the help guide.

Well, when you add media, you do it by clicking the Import Media toolbar button or doing File>Library>Import Media.

When you do that, you'll see the Add Media dialog box. There's a field at the top of that box, that says "Search" and it probably has something like C:\, well, just change that so you only search for media in your "My Music" folder. Click on the little ellipses (sp) button right next to the C:\ bit. Then you can select your My Music folder, it's basically one of those "Browse" buttons you see.

This way when you search for media only your music files will be added.

Oh, and if you click the Advanced button you can select the file types it will search for. Only select music file types. All mine are MP3s, so it' makes it easy.

Hope that makes sense.

Oh, yeah, the "All Music" smartlist does match to what shows up in the Audio section of the tree. It's just a nifty smartlist to use. Of course if you're like me and have more music than will fit on your iPod, you need to get a little more creative.

More on that if you need it... ;)

Hey...I think I'm about all set now! Still seems buggy with file transfers, but all in all, an AMAZING improvement over MusicMatch!

(On a side note, it's so odd that Apple, with its amazing attention to design of the iPOD, didn't put more thought into the Windows version of it's software. Seems like they just called MusicMatch and asked if they can use their program...even if it doesn't work that welll...but I digress...)
